CHARLEBOIS: Milking the myth — why Ottawa can’t keep dairy ‘off the table’

For decades, Canada’s supply management system has acted as both shield and stabilizer for the country’s dairy sector. By regulating production, fixing quotas, and limiting imports through tariff rate quotas (TRQs), the model has provided farmers with stable incomes, preserved rural communities, and sustained a form of food sovereignty. But as the Globe and Mail recently reported, Ottawa is now considering regulatory changes that could allow more U.S. dairy products onto Canadian shelves — a signal that the system is under growing strain.

FBI Director Kash Patel Cuts Ties With ADL, Slams Comey’s ‘Love Letters’ to Group

FBI Director Kash Patel announced this week that the bureau is formally ending its partnership with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), distancing the agency from a relationship that began under former FBI Director James Comey.

“James Comey disgraced the FBI by writing ‘love letters’ to the ADL and embedding agents with an extreme group functioning like a terrorist organization and the disgraceful operation they ran spying on Americans. That was not law enforcement, it was activism dressed up as counterterrorism, and it put Americans in danger,” Patel told Fox News Digital.

“That era is finished. This FBI formally rejects Comey’s policies and any partnership with the ADL,” he added.

Defence procurement vs. defence production: What’s best for Canada?

As the Carney government tries to breathe life back into Canada’s military and its industrial base with a new federal agency, it’s being told it needs to make the distinction between defence procurement and defence production.

The contrast in language may be subtle, but from a public policy and political perspective it would be a radical shift in mindset for a country that has divested itself of many aspects of the arms industry and has been reluctant to embrace and promote those sectors that remain.

The distinction is critically important as the Liberal government prepares to unveil the long-promised defence procurement agency.

Inside the Antifa siege on ‘war zone’ Portland and the resistance to the National Guard cleaning it up

Violent Antifa criminals have laid siege to the ICE detention center in Portland, Oregon, for over 100 days.

Every night the encampment of wackos – some dressed as a unicorn or a chicken – blast loud music, engage in anti-government chants over loudspeakers and megaphones, and when they violently clash with law enforcement officers it reverberates around the neighborhood.

Since the protest started on June 2, neighbor Cloud Elvengrail has barely slept. Assaulted and bullied by the Antifa goons, she describes the area as a “war zone” and “terrifying.”

French special forces board Russian tanker linked to’drone ship’ reports

French troops have boarded the deck of a tanker alleged to be from Russia’s ‘shadow fleet’ and suspected of involvement in drone flights over Denmark last month.

A source within the executive branch told AFP earlier that the French navy had boarded the Boracay, a Benin-flagged vessel blacklisted by the European Union for being part of Russia’s sanction-busting fleet of ageing oil tankers.

French President Emmanuel Macron did not confirm reports of a connection to Danish drone flights but said on Wednesday that the ship had committed ‘serious offences’.

How will they celebrate diversity? Mississauga moves one step closer to imposing a full ban on fireworks

Fireworks could soon be completely off limits in the City of Mississauga.

On Wednesday, City Council’s general committee considered an updated staff report that recommends a ban on consumer fireworks or those used by the public for outdoor enjoyment across the municipality.

Prepared by Raj Sheth, the city’s commissioner of community services, it calls for a “full prohibition on the sale, distribution, possession and use of consumer fireworks in Mississauga,” adding that failing to do so could “unintentionally encourage greater fireworks use in Mississauga, resulting in additional enforcement pressures, increased safety risks and avoidable neighbourhood disturbances.”

Why a US government shutdown is a gift to Trump

As the US government was plunged into a shutdown, Donald Trump was no doubt relishing the idea of the days ahead.

Four months after Elon Musk and his cost-cutting lieutenants left the administration under a cloud, the shutdown has given the president another chance to take a hatchet to federal bureaucracy, and achieve the massive government savings he promised.

The administration’s promised $2 trillion (£1.5 trillion) in cuts, to be carried out by Mr Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), never materialised despite the sacking of a spate of government workers.

New group Project Ontario takes aim at Doug Ford, who dismisses them as radicals

A new group called Project Ontario is taking aim at Doug Ford, accusing the Premier of abandoning conservative principles, while he dismisses its members as “yahoos” who are part of the radical right.

The group, whose listed contributors are writers, former provincial staffers and political organizers, is pushing the Progressive Conservative government to pursue more right-leaning policies on everything from deficit spending to education to health care.

They say Ontario has faltered under almost a decade of PC rule, citing high housing costs, an overcrowded health care system, flat productivity growth and limited options for child care.

Hamas military leader in Gaza objects to ceasefire plan, BBC understands

The BBC understands that mediators have made contact with the head of Hamas’s military wing in Gaza, who indicated he does not agree to new US ceasefire plan.

Izz al-Din al-Haddad is thought to believe the plan was designed to finish Hamas, whether the group accepts it or not, and so is determined to fight on.

US President Donald Trump’s 20-point framework to end the war – which has already been accepted by Israel – stipulates that Hamas disarm and have no future role in governing Gaza.

I’m shocked.

Derek Finkle: Academics trying to gaslight residents terrorized by safe injection site crime

Residents near an injection site in the west Toronto neighbourhood of Parkdale have been raising concerns for years about illegal drug activity around the perimeter of the site. They were hoping some solutions would be tabled when the executive director of the Parkdale Queen West Community Health Centre, Angela Robertson, called a meeting on July 17 to address the community’s escalating concerns, including a disturbing video of a fight in an adjoining park while a member of the site’s controversial security firm looked on.
