Self-defence deters criminals more than complying

In Canada, if people can’t successfully “hide” from criminals, police officials are advising crime victims to “comply” with a criminal’s demands. Jim MacSween, the chief of York Regional Police since 2020 who oversees 1.2 million residents living in York Region, warned residents not to attempt to confront intruders but to comply with the criminal until law enforcement arrives.

Four Seconds on a Charlotte Train

The slaughter of Iryna Zarutska was horrific, unacceptable—and preventable.

The video of Decarlos Brown, Jr., slaughtering 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska on a Charlotte light-rail train on the night of August 22nd is sickening in many ways, but one aspect of the horror was how mundanely it unfolded. All of us who have had to contend with greater chaos and danger on mass-transit systems since 2020 have created useful fictions for ourselves: that wouldn’t happen to me, because I know not to sit near the crazy guy. I know to sit around other people. I know how to defend myself—punch someone, bite someone, scream. The video demolishes that fiction. We’ve also had to contend with a related fiction: that our transit systems remain safe. It’s time we stopped accepting random murders on our transit systems as normal.

The TTC is an urban transit nightmare.

‘It’s just like somebody passing away’: Thunderchild First Nation loses only church to fire

Fred Thunderchild and his wife Alvina were roused in the early hours of Sept. 1 by a phone call from a neighbour. Their church was on fire.

The couple, who are co-pastors, rushed to the church on Thunderchild First Nation, which is approximately 210 kilometres from Saskatoon, as soon as they heard.

“When we got there, it’s already pretty well all smokey, like from the seams and from the doors,” Fred said.

China’s Threat – Wainright’s Important Warning

After watching the carefully stage-managed parade of Communist Chinese military power observing the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, it is important to hear and heed the warning provided by an American general who endured four brutal years as a Japanese prisoner-of-war eight decades ago.

General Jonathan Wainwright fought a brave but futile defense of the Philippines in the days after Pearl Harbor. Having been overwhelmed by far superior forces, his men faced the Bataan Death March and barbaric treatment from their Japanese captors.

Could Canadian LNG ambitions put Washington on edge?

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Canadian and American leaders have long touted the idea of North American energy dominance, building one of the world’s most deeply integrated energy markets, complete with cross-border pipelines and power grids.

In recent years, however, left-leaning politicians on both sides have worked to reduce fossil fuel dependence and accelerate the transition to clean energy.

CHARLEBOIS: When the phone replaces the kitchen

Do you use platforms like UberEats or DoorDash to order meals at the office or at home? If so, you’re not alone. The growth of these applications has been significant in recent years, though it varies widely across regions and generations.

According to a survey conducted in late August by Dalhousie University’s Agri-Food Analytics Lab, in partnership with Caddle, 27.4% of Canadians now order through these platforms more than once a month. That’s a clear increase from 2020, when only 20% of Canadians did so on a regular basis.

I don’t use any “food delivery” apps. Far too TFW sketchy in my books.

I would not be surprised if Farm Boy’s penchant for hiring Apu and his 37 cousins resulted in this. I bought packaged pepperoni sticks from my local, rotten with mold. I stay away.

NASA discovers ‘clearest sign of life that we’ve ever found on Mars’

Rolling across the rugged, rusty red terrain on Mars, NASA’s Perseverance rover came upon some rocks with peculiar green, blue, black and white dots. After detailed image analysis, scientists have come to a potentially encouraging conclusion: If those speckled rocks were formed like they are on Earth, they might be evidence of past life on the dusty planet.

The rocks “very well could be the clearest sign of life that we’ve ever found on Mars, which is incredibly exciting,” acting NASA administrator Sean P. Duffy said in a news conference Wednesday. The findings were published in the journal Nature on Wednesday.
