‘We’re in a war zone’: On patrol with security in a First Nation gripped by tensions

Kanesatake pot stores

… Community members told CBC News that incidents such as arson, vehicle accidents and conflicts have increased over the past three years. Some in the community, which has no police force, blame the presence of cannabis megastores and a spate of illegal dumping that saw as many as 500 trucks a day roar into Kanehsatà:ke, according to Quebec court records.

… The stores operate outside of Quebec and Canada’s cannabis laws, and the Mohawk Council of Kanesatake has so far failed to pass any rules to regulate these operations, some of which are linked to organized crime, according to elected band officials.

“We’re in a war zone,” Montour told CBC News. “Nobody is helping us.”

German Chancellor Admits That Welfare State Is Running Out of Other People’s Money

The biggest, boldest lie of every welfare state is that the goods and services it is providing to its citizens are “free.” Those of us with brain cells and an aversion to lying know that this is not only untrue, but also impossible. Politicians are fond of throwing taxpayer dollars around like drunk Kennedy cousins on summer break in Monte Carlo in order to make voters love them.

Mounties, Overstretched and Overmatched by Foreign Mafias, No Longer Fit for Service

The head on that fish has been rotten for some time.

OTTAWA — The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, once a proud symbol of Canadian law and order, is now an institution in crisis. Reports that nearly 20 percent of members are off on sick leave confirm what many of us who have served and worked alongside the RCMP have known for years: the force is no longer capable of fulfilling its federal policing mandate.

Instead of standing at the forefront of the fight against transnational organized crime, terrorism financing, cybercrime, and foreign interference, the RCMP is bogged down in contract policing, backfilling gaps with temporary duty assignments, and diverting precious resources to VIP security. What was once a national force is now an overstretched patchwork, trying—and failing—to be all things to all people.

The Liberal government has extended Canada’s NATO presence in Latvia for another three years, but it is still struggling to fill in the equipment gaps as the war in Ukraine rapidly reshapes the battlefield troops might be expected to fight on.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the three-year extension Tuesday night following a meeting with Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina in Riga, the capital of the Baltic country.

On Wednesday, he visited Canadian troops at Camp Adazi, where roughly 2,200 Canadian soldiers are serving along with 1,300 troops from more than a dozen other NATO nations.

Kneecap keeps Canadian tour dates, cancels U.S. shows due to court hearing

The Irish hip-hop group Kneecap, whose performance at Coachella earlier this year sparked controversy for projected messages against the Israeli government’s war in Gaza, is cancelling 15 of its shows in the United States but says four scheduled shows in Vancouver and Toronto will go on.

In an Instagram post this week, the group announced it was cancelling the U.S. shows due to Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh’s upcoming court hearing in London scheduled for Sept. 26.

Ó Hannaidh is a rapper and group co-founder who performs under the name Mo Chara. He faces terrorism charges in the United Kingdom after videos emerged appearing to show him wearing a Hezbollah flag over his head. Both Hezbollah and Hamas are designated terror groups in Britain and Canada.
