ANALYSIS: Charging, Resale Among Added Hurdles Slowing EV Adoption

The near-term challenges of mass electric vehicle (EV) adoption inevitably begin with price, but a recent cold snap has re-emphasized battery and charging snags. In addition, as prices for new EVs trend down, new buyers also have to consider potentially lower resale values.

Tom Narayan, lead equity analyst covering global autos at RBC Capital Markets, told BNN Bloomberg on Jan. 31 that the EV market is going through a bit of a slowdown.

Revealed: suspected Russian spy ‘worked for MI6’ and Foreign Office

The refugee from Afghanistan, who met David Cameron, Gordon Brown and the future King, denies wrongdoing but says MI5 has accused him of being groomed by Russia since the age of five

An alleged Russian spy lied to gain asylum in the UK before he worked for the Foreign Office, accessed British military and intelligence secrets and met with the future King, The Times has learnt.

The refugee from Afghanistan, who is accused of spying for Russia’s military intelligence agency, also worked for GCHQ and MI6, a court heard.

He worked with two prime ministers and met Prince Charles and Prince William on visits to Afghanistan while working for the British government. He ultimately obtained both Russian and British citizenship.

‘Terrorizing our community’: Arrests made in GTA extortion attempts

Police in Peel Region are investigating 29 separate cases of attempted extortion targeting South Asian business owners in a rash of crime Brampton’s mayor says is “terrorizing” the community.

Investigators announced the probes as part of their newly-minted Extortion Investigative Task Force (opens in a new tab)(EITF) at a news conference on Wednesday and identified five suspects who have been arrested in connection with three alleged incidents across the Greater Toronto Area since December 2023.

The mother of a school shooter was convicted of manslaughter. What does this mean for other cases?

A Michigan mother could face up to 60 years in prison after a jury convicted her on Tuesday on four counts of involuntary manslaughter, after her teenage son killed four students in a school shooting in 2021.

Prosecutors argued Michigan law compelled Jennifer Crumbley to prevent her then-15-year-old son, Ethan, from harming others, and the jury in the case agreed.

Now 17, Ethan is serving a life sentence after pleading guilty to murder and terrorism charges in October 2022. (His father, James Crumbley, will have his own involuntary manslaughter trial in March.)

Hundreds of families live in hotels and motels waiting for permanent housing in Ottawa

The City of Ottawa says there are about 300 families or 1,039 people staying in hotels, motels, and post-secondary residences waiting for permanent housing because emergency shelters are over-capacity.

Jamieson Ferguson and her family were once one of them. The 26-year-old mother of three, expecting her fourth, stayed in a motel for just over two years.

“Let me tell you, that is not a place for children,” she said.

Alberta’s 4,481 Megawatts of Wind Power Produced Only 3 MW Monday Night, 2 Tuesday Morning

Where are we going? Lower! That was the trend for wind power production in Alberta on Monday, Feb. 5, as the 4,481 megawatts of nameplate wind power generation capacity fell to just three megawatts output. That’s less than 0.1 percent, or less than 1 one-thousandth of nameplate capacity. If you want to get really technical, it’s actually 0.07 percent, or 7 ten-thousandths of nameplate capacity.

That’s according to minute-by-minute data from the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO).

On ArriveCan, Conservatives switch from prosecution to defence

In the long, strange series of hearings into the ArriveCan app, one of the most peculiar twists is that Conservative MPs have switched sides from prosecution to defence.

In November, when senior civil servant Cameron MacDonald appeared at hearings, Conservative MPs pounced. Now they are his defenders – and attacking investigators for treating him unfairly.

Mr. MacDonald had been a director-general of IT innovation at the Canada Border Services Agency when the ArriveCan project started in 2020.

The D.C. Circuit’s Misunderstood Trump Immunity Ruling

In my post Tuesday night, I tried to explain the one-page order the D.C. Circuit federal appeals court issued in conjunction with yesterday’s 57-page opinion denying former president Trump’s immunity claim. The order involved the timing of what’s known as the issuance of the “mandate” — basically, the court’s formal decision. The mandate conveys jurisdiction back to the District Court (where Judge Tanya Chutkan is presiding), which, in turn, must apply the Circuit’s ruling.

My post addressed how the Circuit is grappling with Trump’s strategy of delay — here, by nudging him into an expeditious appeal to the Supreme Court. There is much misunderstanding about this.

Western allies chilled by China’s new Antarctic base

Early Chicom Antarctic Base

President Xi has lauded the inauguration of a Chinese scientific research base in Antarctica which the US fears could be developed to monitor military activity in the southern hemisphere.

The Qinling research centre will “contribute to enhancing humanity’s scientific understanding of Antarctica, provide a platform for China’s co-operation with other countries in Antarctic scientific exploration, and promote peace and sustainable development in Antarctica”, according to the foreign ministry.

Black and Hispanic voters deserting Democratic party in large numbers, poll says

Black and Hispanic voters are deserting the Democratic party in numbers that will present a concern for Joe Biden’s re-election effort, a poll has found.

Among Black Americans expressing a party preference, the Democratic lead over Republicans has dropped by almost 20% in only three years, according to the Gallup survey.

The Democratic lead among Hispanic adults and adults aged 18 to 29, meanwhile, also slid by almost the same degree, leaving the party with only a modest advantage.

Four more years? Biden Says He Recently Spoke with French President Who Died in 1996

Old Joe Biden on Sunday recounted a conversation he says he had not long after he was elected with “Mitterrand of Germany.” Of the many remarkable achievements of this singular man’s presidency, this has got to rank as the most remarkable of all, for François Mitterrand was not “of Germany;” he was president of France from 1981 to 1995, and he died in 1996. Many people are pointing to Old Joe’s words as just the latest in a long string of indications that he is unfit for the presidency, but look at the bright side: if the man can summon the dead, maybe he could have a chat with Charlemagne or Jan Sobieski, and turn this mess around. Four more years!

Hamas sympathizer gets his clock cleaned with the Socratic method while Islamist newcomers chase off gay MP

In its prime, Western civilization was (arguably) the peak of human existence, so watching as it succumbs to the regressive ideologies of leftism and the culture of 7th century barbarism is a gut-punch, but there is a silver lining: ridiculing the leftists, who each have the intellectual capability of an amoeba, has never been so funny, and I love to laugh.

Is Violent Porn Making Girls Identify as Transgender?

For many young people, masculinity and femininity are defined by online pornography—with profound and ugly consequences.

In 2022, The Daily Wire released the documentary What is a Woman? The film featured conservative commentator Matt Walsh exploring the titular question through a combination of interviews and on-the-ground reporting, and the results were typically triggering for transgender activists outraged by the film’s success. According to X (formerly Twitter), the documentary accumulated 177 million views on the platform within a week—which, even when adjusting for shoddy metrics, makes it one of the most successful documentaries of all time.
