GUNTER: Saturday’s electricity panic in Alberta shows how unready alternate energies are for the dead of winter

As they were settling in to watch a hockey game on television just before 6:00 p.m. on Saturday evening, every Albertan with a cellphone received a message via the Alberta Emergency Alert system warning that record-breaking cold weather “resulting in high power demand has placed the Alberta (electric) grid at a high risk of rotating power outages.”

Japanese researchers say side effects of COVID vaccines linked to 201 types of diseases

Japanese researchers say their “shocking” systematic review of research papers on COVID-19 vaccines has discovered thousands of side effects “affecting every possible aspect of human pathology.”

Two major retailers in California’s Bay Area are putting socks and underwear under lock and key in an effort to deter shoplifters.

Hundreds of people gathered in Toronto’s streets this weekend to enjoy the company of like-minded people in celebrating — get this — the Houthi faction of Yemen, which declared war on civilian cargo ships in November and has since taken innocent crewmen hostage.

Georgia Credit Union Bars Customers From Purchasing Guns With Their Own Money

Georgia United Credit Union recently updated their User Agreement — you know, that wall of text that your financial institution flashes at you from time to time and which few people bother to read. The catch: If you rely on Georgia United Credit Union for your purchasing tool, like, say, a debit card, you may no longer use that to purchase firearms, ammunition, firearms parts, or accessories, along with a host of other items.

Vancouver’s PuSh Festival has a new nickname: The Push Over Festival

For years, the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival has been a highlight of Vancouver’s arts scene. I once called it a “beacon of avant-garde light in the dead of winter.”

I won’t be calling it that any more. The festival has now added to the darkness of this already tragic, oppressive season.

Last week, PuSh decided to cancel its planned performances of the Canadian play The Runner at the Simon Fraser University Woodward’s Goldcorp Centre for the Arts. The one-person play, written by Christopher Morris, has received rave reviews, including from The Globe and Mail’s J. Kelly Nestruck in 2018.

Israel forbids doctors from speaking to UN group investigating Oct. 7 atrocities

The Health Ministry on Monday instructed members of the healthcare system not to cooperate with the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel, citing its perceived anti-Israel stance.

In recent weeks, senior physicians and hospital staff who treated October 7 victims and released hostages have received letters and emails from the commission, which operates under the UN Council for Human Rights. The commission requested information and interviews for its investigation of international and gender-based crimes since the beginning of the current Israel-Hamas war.

Queen’s University could ‘go under’ without cuts to courses

Queen’s University is in danger of going under if its financial situation is not dramatically improved through spending cuts, according to a senior administrator at the Kingston, Ont., school.

Small undergraduate classes of fewer than ten students have already been earmarked to be eliminated from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, which is on track to run out of reserve money next year. Graduate classes of fewer than five students are reported to be next on the list.

Trump’s Iowa Landslide

Is a sense of unfairness in the Biden administration’s use of criminal prosecutions against the leading Republican candidate powering the 45th president’s astonishing surge on the hustings?

President Trump’s victory in Iowa — where he won an absolute majority in a four-person race — will certainly put a spring in his step. It might not be, history suggests, a reliable predictor of who will emerge as the party nominee. The landslide by which he trounced two strong Republicans, though, is remarkable. It goes a long way in putting paid to the notion that, as Conrad Black puts it, the 45th president is a spent political force.
