Can the Sussexes really make a comeback?

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are no strangers to criticism. Even so, a take-down from The Hollywood Reporter would have hurt. The magazine, the trade bible in the world of film, television and showbusiness has included the couple on their annual “winners and losers” list for 2023. They were not on the right side.

“In 2020, the royal duo fled a life of ceremonial public service to cash in their celebrity status in the States,” its citation as one of the year’s losers read. “But after a whiny Netflix documentary, a whiny biography (Spare – even the title is a pouty gripe) and an inert podcast, the Harry and Meghan brand swelled into a sanctimonious bubble just begging to be popped – and South Park was the pin.”

The World Is at War

Senator JD Vance on December 11 suggested that Ukraine surrender land in order to obtain a peace settlement with Russia.

“It ends the way nearly every single war has ever ended: when people negotiate and each side gives up something that it doesn’t want to give up,” the Ohio Republican said to reporters. “No one can explain to me how this ends without some territorial concessions relative to the 1991 boundaries.”

Islamic extremist jailed for life over Hyde Park terror plot

An Islamist extremist who planned to murder a Christian preacher at Speakers’ Corner refused to attend court yesterday to receive a life jail sentence.

Edward Little was being monitored by MI5 when he considered attacking Queen Elizabeth’s funeral but abandoned the plot as he was “too late”.

Instead he targeted Hatun Tash, who had previously received £10,000 compensation from police after being arrested twice for complaining she was being threatened by Islamic protesters at Speakers’ Corner in Hyde Park, central London.

NY Times’s Callous, Cynical Weisman Paints Antisemitism As Mere Wedge Issue for GOP

New York Times reporter and controversialist Jonathan Weisman made the front page of Monday’s New York Times with “Is Anti-Zionism Always Antisemitic? A Fraught Question for the Moment.” Weisman approached the sensitive matter with his trademark politically corrupted cynicism: In Weisman’s world, no matter the gravity of the issue at hand, Republicans are invariably being partisan hacks when they address it.

Ottawa’s delayed strategy on foreign students

Foreign students didn’t create the country’s current housing shortage. Blame should also not fall on the shoulders of temporary foreign workers, refugee claimants or new immigrants to this country.

Blame rightly falls to governments that failed to see the flashing warning signs of a housing shortage for years and a federal government that has put out the welcome mat to new arrivals and essentially had them sleep on the floor.

The foreign student scam was just another way to gain Canadian citizenship.

Britain will be “Venezuela for 20 years” if Labour wins the next general election, Dr Jordan Peterson has warned.

Speaking to The Telegraph, the Canadian psychologist said that it was “highly likely” that Sir Keir Starmer would be elected, but that it would be a “catastrophe”.

In a wide-ranging interview, Dr Peterson also said that believing people can change gender represents “maximal confusion” and criticised the ideology of “diversity is unity.”

Teen terrorists: Does Canada have a youth radicalization problem?

The arrest of a teenager accused of plotting a terrorist attack against the Ottawa Jewish community is the latest sign that Canada is struggling with the radicalization of youths.

The minor, taken into custody on Friday night, was the second youth apprehended for terrorism in two days. On Wednesday, RCMP arrested a 16-year-old in Calgary over an unrelated plot.

‘We spit in your beer’ – inside Europe’s grassroots fight against overtourism

Europeans are taking matters into their own hands with bogus posters, hostile graffiti and misleading signposts

For years now, governments and city authorities have introduced measures to control tourism – from regulating cruise ships to clamping down on short-term lets – but now, it seems, locals are taking matters into their own hands.

All across Europe fingers are pressing down on spray-paint nozzles, bogus posters are being plastered onto walls, banners unfurling outside historic buildings.

We spoke to our experts in Barcelona, Amsterdam, Greece, Croatia and Venice to shed light on the grassroots campaigns against overtourism, and how things stepped up a notch in 2023.
