Diane Francis: India spat exposes holes in Canada’s immigration, criminal justice systems

The Liberal and NDP coalition have failed to protect Canada’s borders. The military has been neglected: there are only 300 full-time military personnel in Canada’s vast North, and the government is looking to further reduce the defence budget. But the gaping holes in the immigration system constitutes another security concern, and underlies the recent diplomatic spat with India.

Conrad Black: Denazification Relied on Proof of Individual Guilt, Rather Than Membership in Nazi Organizations

The condemnation of 98-year-old Yaroslav Hunka as a former member of the Waffen SS after he was honoured in Canada’s Parliament has been excessive. The person who exposed him in that capacity, Lev Golinkin, is a Nazi hunter whose criterion for the asseveration of capital crimes for a suspect of Nazi crimes is service in any capacity in a para-military or police unit that has reasonably been found guilty of the commission of such crimes.

Britain has ‘run out of arms to send to Ukraine’

Britain has run out of defence equipment to donate to Ukraine and other countries should step in and shoulder more of the burden, a senior military chief has said.

The comments come after Ben Wallace revealed that he asked Rishi Sunak to spend £2.3 billion more on support for Ukraine before he resigned as defence secretary last month.

Mr Wallace warned that the UK had been overtaken by Germany as the biggest European military donor to Ukraine as he called for the 50 per cent increase on funding that the UK has committed so far.

B.C. man has to pay support for children of man who doused him in lighter fluid

A B.C. realtor, who at one point was nearly set on fire by the former husband of his lover and business partner, has been ordered to pay child support to the woman and her children who were fathered by the lighter-fluid wielding ex.

John Darcy McLeod, who had what a judge called a “volatile, on-again off-again relationship of more than seven years” with Laurissa Anne Code, also had a business partnership with Code, which began in 2012. Both the relationship, which began around the same time as the business arrangement, and the partnership, came to an end in 2020.

Minimum wage is up in 6 provinces, but can it help ease affordability pressure?

As Canadians continue to grapple with a rising cost of living, six provinces raised the minimum wage over the weekend. However, advocates who have been calling for these increases say it may not be enough to ease pressure on working-class Canadians.

The largest increase comes in Manitoba, where the minimum wage increased from $14.15 to $15.30 on Sunday. Ontario, too, saw an increase of more than a dollar from $15.50 to $16.55. Nova Scotia, P.E.I. and Newfoundland and Labrador all increased the minimum wage by 50 cents to $15.

Homeowners brace for mortgage payment shock amid higher-for-longer rate outlook

TORONTO – From ultra-low interest rates that led to a huge spike in real estate demand(opens in a new tab) to the speed with which interest rates shot up to levels not seen in a generation, it’s been hard to keep up with the shifting landscape for mortgage holders.

Now, with interest rates increasingly expected to stay higher for longer, many of the homeowners who locked in low rates years ago are likely bracing themselves for financial pain as their mortgage comes up for renewal.

India tells Canada to withdraw 41 diplomats, report says, as diplomatic fight worsens

India has told Canada that it must repatriate 41 diplomats by Oct. 10, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

Nijjar, 45, had been wanted by India for years and was gunned down outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, B.C., on June 18.

Sam Bankman-Fried: the rise and crash of a crypto billionaire

I first heard about Sam Bankman-Fried at the end of 2021 from a friend who wanted me to help him figure out who he was. My friend was about to close a deal with Sam that would bind their fates, through an exchange of shares in each other’s companies worth hundreds of millions of dollars. He remained uneasy. He thought he understood FTX, the crypto exchange that Sam had built, but he didn’t have as good a feel for Sam himself. He’d asked around about Sam and discovered that, as little as he felt he really knew him, other people, even people who had invested millions of dollars in Sam’s company, knew even less.

How Elites Ate the Social Justice Movement

Hollywood Stars

I’m a Marxist. Though I’m a fairly unorthodox one at this point, I would still love to see a Marxist revolution. You know, an international movement of workers rising up and taking control of political and economic systems, and distributing resources and labor based on need, while organized under the principle of shared ownership of the productive apparatus of society.

But with American progressivism focused on identity politics, not class interests, forever wandering from the righteous to the ridiculous, this appears to be an unrealistic dream. So I’m left to settle for a set of lefty policy preferences that I can live with—a child tax credit, far more muscular laws protecting labor organizing, single-payer health insurance, reparations for slavery, and so on.
