Paris makes Olympic effort to tackle scourge of bedbugs

The French government has vowed to tackle the “scourge” of bedbugs in Paris that threatens to overshadow the 2024 Olympic Games.

Social media users have been publishing footage of the insects crawling around in high-speed trains and the Paris metro, alongside a raft of online articles about bedbugs in cinemas and even Charles de Gaulle airport.

Emmanuel Gregoire, the deputy mayor of Paris, said: “You have to understand that in reality no one is safe. Obviously there are risk factors but in reality, you can catch bedbugs anywhere and bring them home.

“Freedom, democracy, and the rule of law is under attack, especially in the Western democracies”: An Interview With AfD MEP Christine Anderson

AfD MEP Christine Anderson became a household name after a speech she delivered at the European Parliament in March of 2022 flooded social and legacy media networks alike. In her speech, Anderson excoriated Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau, calling him a “disgrace to any democracy” for his authoritarian-esque actions against truckers opposing forced vaccinations.

The fire-breathing German MEP made her foray into politics in 2013 when she became a member of the right-conservative Alternative for Deutschland (AfD). Quickly, and likely due to her fighting spirit paired with her no-nonsense, matter-of-fact, communication style, she rose in the party’s ranks. After having served as the AfD’s group leader in the Limburg-Weilburg district, in Hesse, from 2016 to 2018, she was elected to represent the German people in the European Parliament.

The Legacy Dianne Feinstein Left California: Crap And Crime

With the passing of longtime Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., on Friday, colleagues from across the political aisle have released a bevy of statements remembering the Golden State’s golden gal.

While President Joe Biden described Feinstein as a “kind and loyal friend,” Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, characterized the California Democrat as a “true public servant” with whom he had a “wonderful working relationship” and “will miss.” Other Democrat and Republican senators such as Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., Susan Collins, R–Maine, and Marco Rubio, R-Fla., also offered their condolences and fond memories of Feinstein.

Canada’s Sikhs under pressure amid row with India

For decades, Canada was a safe haven for Sikhs. Many left their native India in the 1980s and ’90s after thousands died there during armed struggles for an independent Sikh state called Khalistan. Nearly 800,000 Sikhs live in Canada today, the largest community outside India.

While the Sikh separatist movement is hardly visible in India anymore, it is still very much alive within the diaspora in Canada. The relationship between India and Canada has been tense for many years because of this.

Philip Cross: Young people’s unhappiness isn’t older generations’ fault

Statistics Canada last week released a sobering but hardly surprising study of the current state of young people in Canada. Many cannot find affordable housing, forcing 43 per cent of 20 to 29-year-olds to live with their parent(s). Nearly 40 per cent believe they can’t afford to have a child over the next three years. Others are having trouble entering the labour market, a problem shared by most youth cohorts but which seems particularly challenging today because of technology. More broadly, Statcan notes young people’s mental health has been declining steadily since 2003, with feelings of loneliness rising and attachment to community declining.

Geofencing: How The Government Used Cell Phone Data To Try To Drive Calvary Chapel Out Of Business

We are in the space between the emergence of this technological practice and courts having ruled on its constitutionality,” said Alex Marthews, national chair for Restore the 4th, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection of the Fourth Amendment, which protects Americans’ rights against “unreasonable search and seizure.”

“Geofencing” often begins with an innocent click. Smartphone apps ask if they can access location to improve service. When users say they yes, they often don’t realize that the apps that help them drive, cook, or pray are likely reselling their information to far-flung for-profit entities. This and other information detailing people’s behaviors and preferences is valuable for businesses trying to target customers. The global location intelligence market was estimated at $16 billion last year, according to Grand View Research, which predicts that figure will grow to $51 billion by 2030.

‘Dark’ donations, free love and the fall: the Sam Bankman-Fried trial is here

For several years, Sam Bankman-Fried was crypto’s rising star, a seemingly razor-sharp and legitimate figure in the largely opaque world.

As founder of the crypto exchange FTX and its associated hedge fund, Alameda Research, Bankman-Fried wooed private investors and lawmakers alike with his pitch of a crypto trading platform that was safer and more risk-averse than those that had preceded it.

As FTX boomed, Bankman-Fried’s profile rose. FTX and its leading competitor, Binance, would come to process most crypto trades around the world. By the age of 30, Bankman-Fried had amassed billions.

I see a pardon in his future regardless of sentence length.

Baltimore’s Thin Blue Line Is Broken

Nothing kills a police department faster than destruction of officer morale—and in the BPD, morale is dead.

The “thin blue line” symbolizes the police’s role in maintaining civilized society. The police are the barrier between the law-abiding and the criminal, the vulnerable and the predatory, order and chaos. Across the United States, police are under attack and the blue line is wavering. In Baltimore, it has broken.

How transgenderism became the new Tide Pod challenge

… People aligned with the Old Right were still concerned with traditional Republican priorities such as lower taxes, spending, and debt. But among the rapidly growing New Right, the category of “cultural challenges” was the highest priority by a significant margin. Those issues included woke corporate policies and the left’s obsession with race. But the largest segment of respondents identified “transgender activists trying to erase the difference between boys and girls” as the greatest cultural challenge facing the country.

F-16s for Ukraine, Just as Soon as Belgium Wakes Up

Last week, realizing that Belgium was once again being laughed at by its NATO partners, Belgian federal government ministers David Clarinval and Hadja Lahbib put the idea of delivering Belgian F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine back on the table.

Their recommendation is immensely important for the US and the West. If the overall Western policy is just “not to let Ukraine lose” rather than to defeat an unprovoked attack against a democracy, Russian President Vladimir Putin will be emboldened to continue his aggression, and China will read the weakness as a green light to invade Taiwan. The US is already seen as having abandoned Afghanistan, during a conflict former President Barack Obama had called “the good war.” The US cannot afford another display of weakness or surrender. Putin sent his troops to the Ukraine in September of 2021, just a few weeks after the US abandoned Afghanistan. He got the message that “the coast was clear.” Unless there is a clear strategy to defeat Russia, anything short of that will look globally like Afghanistan, the sequel; another example of US fecklessness, and a good reason not to be an ally.
