Toronto is a broken city …

Recently, on a Star This Matters podcast panel of columnists, I asked my colleague Shawn Micallef to sum up the state of this election in one sentence: “Broken city, gotta fix it,” he said.

We on the panel nodded, and I bet a bunch of you are as well. The list of accumulating problems is well-known and feels sky-high: the rent is too damn high, the roads are jammed and potholed, transit service is being cut, stuff like garbage bins and street bollards are falling apart, fear of crime is way up, homeless people are sleeping in parks because there’s no room in shelters, and the price of food is through the roof. Just for starters. Early park restroom openings aside, the picture hasn’t gotten any rosier since I asked during the fall election campaign “Toronto, can’t we do better?”

If this comes true Toronto is Toast …

Most Torontonians want a progressive mayor, opinion surveys suggest

Torontonians appear eager to elect a progressive mayor after 13 years of rule from the political centre and right, according to multiple opinion polls.

While results from different firms have varied since April, they all show the most left-leaning prominent candidates — former NDP MP Olivia Chow and City Councillor Josh Matlow — with combined support significantly higher than that of rivals on the political right.

France asks US for extra protection from resurgent Islamist terror threat

France’s interior minister has appealed to the US for increased security assistance, saying that Islamist terrorism remains the “primary threat” to Europe ahead of next year’s Olympic Games in Paris.

Calling for greater collaboration between the French and US intelligence services, Gerald Darmanin said that “for Europeans and for France, the primary risk is Sunni Islamist terrorism”.

Italy’s Meloni rejects criticism from Groomer Trudeau over LGBTQ2S+ rights at G7 Summit

Note – Surrogate birth is a contentious issue in Italy and to my knowledge remains illegal as the court has declared it demeaning to women. Pic is from Libero, Google translated

ROME – Italy’s “far-right” Premier Giorgia Meloni on Sunday rejected criticism from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the G7 Summit about her government’s stance on LGBTQ+ rights.

A reporter asked Meloni about the criticism at a news conference early Sunday in Hiroshima, Japan, which is hosting the annual summit of leaders from seven of the world’s leading industrialized nations.

Meloni should have kicked PM Groomer in the nutz.

If looks could kill.

Chinese cars are about to wreck the German market

Government subsidies for electric vehicles are hurting domestic suppliers

Will China be the car manufacturer of the future? If one reads some of the more recent headlines in German media, it certainly seems like it. The leading tabloid paper Bild was in full panic mode, worrying that Chinese cars “will overrun Germany” and that they have “tripled their market share”. A closer look at the data, however, reveals that this 300% increase took place exclusively in the electric vehicle (EV) market, and even there Chinese cars are not the most popular. Starting from very low historic sales numbers, the market share for newly registered passenger cars between January and April 2023 was a meagre 0.8%, compared to the almost 60% share of German car manufacturers.

Canadian Doctors Reconstruct Faces of Wounded Ukrainian Soldiers

CZELADZ, Poland—Oleksandr Karpets, a marksman from Ukraine’s 80th Air Assault Brigade, remembers the bone-crushing pressure on his face when shrapnel from a Russian tank artillery round shaved off his lower jaw, leaving him on the ground gasping for breath as his comrades radioed base thinking he was dead.

“I was on the position that happened to be first in the line of fire,” the 35-year-old says.

The crusade against ‘whiteness’ is destroying culture.

The cancellation of classical music

Until August 2020, Dona Vaughn had been the longtime artistic director of opera at the Manhattan School of Music. Her experience included singing, acting and directing on and off Broadway and on opera stages. The Manhattan School of Music’s 2019 production of Saverio Mercadante’s little-known opera buffa, I due Figaro, showed her influence in stunningly charismatic and witty student performances.

The Durham Report Exposes How Thin the Collusion Case Really Was

Even FBI officials working the case admitted that it had been opened on the flimsiest of grounds.

The vaporousness of the predication for the FBI’s Trump–Russia investigation, “Crossfire Hurricane,” was described Tuesday in our editorial on the Durham Report (and in my post the same day). For years, I have maintained that the probe was opened on false pretenses. But now that we have Special Counsel John Durham’s careful and comprehensive account of the debacle, the bureau and its allied Russiagate agonistes ought to be humiliated. They deranged the country for years over what, at the time they opened the case, FBI leaders knew was a grossly irresponsible basis for commencing any serious investigation, let alone for intruding the bureau into the politics of a presidential election. The damage this sordid affair has done to the FBI as an institution may not be reparable.

8 Disturbing Similarities between the Democrat and Nazi Parties

Steve McCann’s “Eight Startling and Uncomfortable Ways the Democrat Party Emulates the Nazi Party” was just the tip of the National Socialist iceberg.

The fascist far left have always had to lie to survive.  They’ve always been on the wrong side of history, and the only way they can remain viable is by gaslighting people on a full-time basis.  For decades, their biggest lie has been that the supposedly pro-freedom side of the political spectrum, imbued in the precepts of individual liberty and limited government, is somehow connected to totalitarian collectivist regimes that displayed the exact opposite of those values.

As the exorcism progressed to the swing of the thurible, swirling incense and tumbled words of prayer, a sheen of sweat gathered on the priest’s face.

Monsignor Serguei Voyemawa crossed himself and placed his hands on the head of the young girl who sat bowed on a wooden stool at his feet, with flickering candles on each side. He had been summoned to drive out the evil spirits within her.

Is Jill Biden calling the Nato leadership shots?

Ben Wallace has confirmed the worst-kept secret in Westminster: he’s the likely UK candidate for the Secretary General of Nato. Speaking in Berlin on Wednesday he told reporters: ‘I’ve always said it would be a good job. That’s a job I’d like.’ It’s a position that falls vacant in October and Wallace has a good claim, having been defence secretary for nearly four years, one of the few to emerge with credit from the Kabul evacuation, and has won plaudits for fighting the Whitehall machine to equip Ukraine before Putin’s invasion last year.

Mr S learns however that a surprising obstacle is standing in his way: the First Lady of the United States. Jill Biden, wife of President Joe, wants a woman in the role. And she thinks a senior female figure from one of the Baltic states, which believe that if Ukraine falls they will be at war next, would fit the bill.

Going For Broke: Black Lives Matter Revenues Dropped 88 Percent in 2022

2022 wasn’t a very good year for Black Lives Matter.

The Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation raised just $9.3 million in the fiscal year ending in June 2022—an 88 percent decrease from the year prior, according to records obtained by the Washington Free Beacon. It’s a staggering decline from Black Lives Matter’s heyday in the summer of 2020, when it parlayed the nationwide unrest that followed George Floyd’s death into an $80 million financial bonanza.

‘Illegal, malign’: China’s state-sponsored crime stretches across Pacific

Australia’s key law enforcement partners have launched a blistering attack on the Chinese government, saying the state actor poses the gravest threat to the security of Australia and its allies, while alleging that Beijing is also green-lighting organised crime bosses as agents of influence in Pacific Island nations.

The FBI has described US and Australian efforts to ramp up the Western law enforcement presence in the Pacific, marked most recently by the Albanese government’s $317 million “Pacific expansion” funding package for the AFP, as aimed in part at countering China’s own efforts in the Indo-Pacific.

FBI Played Fast and Loose With the Facts to Exaggerate ‘Domestic Terror’ Threat

Old Joe Biden said it again last Sunday: “The most dangerous terrorist threat to our homeland is white supremacy.” Old Joe has told this particular whopper before, as has Gestapo chief Merrick Garland and the FBI. Yet actual white supremacist terrorists in any significant numbers have been notably lacking. But you’ll be relieved to know, however, that our nation’s intrepid G-men are on the case: an FBI whistleblower testified before Congress Thursday that the bureau had actually fudged data in order to make domestic terrorism related to the Jan. 6 fake “insurrection” look much bigger than it really is.
