This historic writers’ strike matters for everyone – not just Hollywood

There is nothing particularly novel about thinking to yourself, “You know, my job used to be pretty decent. Now, I’m working harder and the money is getting scarcer. What happened?” You might think this, in 2023, as a college professor or a cab driver or a journalist or a factory worker. This is America – our entire economy is built on making millions of jobs worse, in order to make a few people very rich.

What would be remarkable is if – when you realized that your once-good job was being made worse in order to satisfy the profit hunger of some faraway investment banker – you were able to actually do something about it. That, in our nation, would be news. That would be something for everyone to cheer for. The plain old workers standing up against enormous companies to stop the process that is turning their careers into execrable “gigs”. Is it a fairy tale? No, my friends. Welcome to the Great Writers Strike of 2023.

Win for the robots I’m betting.

Senior Ukrainian officials fear counterattack may not live up to hype

KYIV, Ukraine — The Ukrainian military has spent nearly 15 months exceeding the world’s expectations. Now, senior leaders are trying to lower those hopes, fearing that the outcome of an imminent counteroffensive aimed at turning the tide of the war with Russia may not live up to the hype.

“The expectation from our counteroffensive campaign is overestimated in the world,” Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said in an interview this past week. “Most people are … waiting for something huge,” he added, which he fears may lead to “emotional disappointment.”

Michael Chong reveals why his story should concern Canadians

OTTAWA— A friend, a man of honour, a man who “embodies all that is best” about the House of Commons.

That’s how not just party colleagues but even partisan rivals described Conservative MP Michael Chong this week as shock rippled through Parliament with revelations he and his family were targets for Chinese state interference in 2021.

But when Chong himself first heard the news, via a Globe and Mail report last Monday, shock wasn’t what hit him.

Low Wage Immigrants Will No Longer Be Welcome in Sweden

Sweden is doubling the minimum income level non-EU migrants need to obtain a permit, with Swedish officials warning that half of the country’s migrants are unable to survive without welfare.

Sweden is raising the minimum income threshold for non-EU job seekers in the latest measure by Stockholm to help curb mass immigration.

On Thursday, May 4th, Minister for Migration Maria Malmer Stenergaad announced that the minimum income threshold will be raised to €2,534 per month for new non-EU workers to receive a Swedish work permit. The country issued 24,000 such non-EU worker permits last year. The new regulations are expected to come into effect in October.

GOLDSTEIN: The warnings about foreign interference — in 2019 — that Trudeau ignored

In August 2019, two months before the 2019 federal election and two years before the 2021 election, which have both raised major concerns about foreign interference, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau received a report from the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians (NSICOP) that he created in 2017 to advise him on security issues.

Five white women who lied about their ancestry

A professor of environmental science specializing in Native American environmental health apologized this week for “incorrectly identifying” as Native American for years, joining a list of white women who have feigned membership in a different racial or ethnic group.

The fringe trend has, in some cases, appeared to attempt to take advantage of affirmative action, while others have used their adopted ethnicity to achieve certain social statuses.

A black man has been accused of shooting two white men in the back of the head in what authorities are describing as a racially motivated hate crime in Oklahoma.

She crossed 12 countries ‘for nothing.’ Asylum seekers rejected by Canada end up stranded in U.S.

Sitting at the bus and gas station in Plattsburgh, N.Y., 24-year-old Naomie shakes her head. She spent more than a year on what she calls le chemin de l’enfer, the road to hell, to escape persecution in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and meet up with a long-lost uncle in Montreal, only to end up exhausted and without any money back at this convenience store in upstate New York.

Naomie fled her country to neighbouring Angola in 2021, after she was raped by her stepfather, a soldier. In Angola, with next to no resources for asylum seekers, she met a man in a market who said he was willing to help her and rented a little place for her to stay. Naomie says she didn’t know he was married and that when his wife found out, she called on a group of bandits who stormed her home in the night. One of the men also raped her.

King Charles Inherits Bulging Royal Purse Thanks to Property Boom

LONDON— King Charles III presides over a monarchy in robust financial health. Behind this is a booming real-estate portfolio of bucolic farms, wholesale warehouses and prime London offices that has helped cover a royal spending spree.

No one outside the palace is exactly sure how rich the monarchy is, or of the personal wealth of its incumbent, Charles, who was crowned on Saturday. The institution’s income comes from a variety of sources, including taxpayers, profits from large tracts of land and undisclosed privately held investments.

This disparity will be the Monarchies downfall.

Trudeau government still trying to think of a good lie explaining why threats against Chong were not passed up to cabinet

Government still investigating why threats against Chong not passed up to cabinet

OTTAWA – The government is still investigating why warnings that a Conservative member of Parliament was being threatened by the Chinese government never made it to the desk of any cabinet minister, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino said Saturday.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Liberal policy convention in Ottawa, he said the possibility of holding someone accountable for that decision remains “under consideration.”

“It’s important that we unearth their reasons as to why this was not brought directly to the attention of the public safety minister at the time, as well as the prime minister because we take these issues seriously,” he said.

I’m glad you’ve bought an electric vehicle. But your conscience isn’t clean

First, you’ve got to drive a long way before you overcome your EV’s embedded carbon debt. And then there’s the trouble with the minerals in its battery

So you’ve finally taken the plunge and bought an electric vehicle (EV)? Me too. You’re basking in the warm glow that comes from doing one’s bit to save the planet, right? And now you know that smug feeling when you are stuck in a motorway tailback behind a hideous diesel SUV that’s pumping out particulates and noxious gases, but you’re sitting there in peace and quiet and emitting none of the above. And when the traffic finally starts to move again you notice that the fast lane is clear and you want to get ahead of that dratted SUV. So you put your foot down and – whoosh! – you get that pressure in the small of your back that only owners of Porsche 911s used to get. Life’s good, n’est-ce pas?

I’m glad to see Ecosnot publications like the Guardian and CBC finally begining to reveal the truth about the Toxic-EV Scam.

But that won’t derail them from their goal of society’s total subjugation to their totalitarian ideology.

In the end they won’t allow you to drive anything.

How to kick a diplomat out of Canada

The federal government is under heavy political pressure to expel a foreign diplomat from Canada. Such expulsions are rare — but they do happen.

Earlier this week, the Globe and Mail reported that Zhao Wei, a diplomat at the Chinese consulate in Toronto, was allegedly working on efforts to threaten the family members of Conservative MP Michael Chong.

Junior won’t act without permission from Xi and Canada’s China Class.

Thousands of Americans Try To Take Advantage of Biden’s Solar Subsidies. They Can’t Connect to a Power Grid.

Outdated power systems create years-long lines to plug in green energy projects

Shortly after President Joe Biden offered tax credits to anyone buying solar panels, a Colorado homeowner named Stacie took out loans to install $30,000 worth of panels on her roof. Nearly six months later, however, those panels sat unused, generating no power.

I bet the cake is better there …

Happy Birthday Kath, I bet your Mom is cooking all your favourites and I hope you have a wonderful day.

I feel a little stronger now, better able to deal with the world, better able to handle the memories, good and bad.

There are still dark times but I know you have a way of staying in touch, even kinda sorta answering requests and that keeps me going.

Your answers may not be specifically what I ask for but they always seem to be what I need, better in fact.

So I will be dining at the Mandarin as you seem to have arranged, and it will be nice to see my very unexpected dinner companion.

I wish we could keep that date together as we had hoped but something tells me you’ll be there.

Let me know how the cake is in heaven, do you cook to earthly standards just for the heck of it or can you simply wish the best cake ever?

It’s OK you can lie and pretend it’s not as good as I used to make.

So Happy Birthday Shortcake. I hope you stuff your face with cake.

This world can never be the same, but I always remind myself it’s not forever.

We’ll make up for all of our broken dates and live all our postponed dreams in time.

PS. There is a backstory to the Mandarin, a coincidence that just seems too “arranged” to be mere coincidence that will see me keep a date Kath and I were unable to. Perhaps we’ll enjoy a serving of healing on the side.

PPS. The pic is Kath boarding a flight to NYC, another of my bad shots that seem to work.

(And I bumped the post a bit to a morning slot. It’s her day.)
