Tractor maker John Deere has agreed to give its US customers the right to fix their own equipment.
Previously, farmers were only allowed to use authorised parts and service facilities rather than cheaper independent repair options.
Deere and Co. is one of the world’s largest makers farming equipment.
Consumer groups have for years been calling on companies to allow their customers to be able to fix everything from smartphones to tractors.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is either clueless about what’s going in Alberta, or cares nothing for the truth.
That’s the unpleasant choice in his inflammatory remarks about provincial action on climate change.
“One of the challenges is there is a political class in Alberta that has decided that anything to do with climate change is going to be bad for them or for Alberta,” Trudeau said in an interview with Reuters, the business news service with a worldwide audience.

A former Virginia Tech soccer player who accused her coach of benching her when she refused to kneel during a pregame social-justice demonstration will get $100,000 under a lawsuit settlement, a new report says.
Kiersten Hening is receiving the money after agreeing to dismiss the federal lawsuit she filed in 2021 against head coach Charles “Chugger” Adair on First Amendment grounds, the Roanoke Times reported.
The settlement includes no admission of wrongdoing by either Hening or her former coach, said her lawyer, Cameron Norris, to the outlet.

Alberta’s environment minister says Ottawa must stop using the term “just transition” because she believes it is shorthand for phasing out Canada’s oil and gas industry.
“The problem with the just transition, it’s a polarizing term,” Sonya Savage said. “And they’ve been using it.”
Savage told CBC’s Rosemary Barton Live on Sunday that the Alberta government and Ottawa agree on many things, including reducing emissions from the oil and gas sector. CBC News offered an interesting slice of life from Vancouver this week. Reporter Yasmine Ghania told the story of a pair of brazen daylight art thefts from the Vancouver Fine Art Gallery: a guy simply walked in off the street on consecutive days and quickly walked out with expensive sculptures valued at $37,000 altogether. The first theft actually went unnoticed for a while, but when the second happened and was witnessed on camera, the gallery owner called the cops.

There’s a belief among some that Canada should dismantle the RCMP in the face of the scandal and criticism that plague the force.

January 9th will mark 2 years since Kathy’s passing. Wish as I might this isn’t a bad dream from which I’ll awake.
Kathy loved visiting New York and I loved roaming the streets with her. The pic was taken during the customary trek to the Lily Pulitzer shop as I recall. We always booked a hotel miles away it seemed. While no fan of shopping the journey was always worth the pleasure of Kathy’s company. And yes I enjoyed being seated in the comfy chair while she modelled possible purchases and we argued about making a selection an early Christmas gift.
So many good memories.
Just before Christmas last year I began to sort through a batch of papers belonging to Kathy’s family.
Birth certificates, citizenship papers, marriage licenses, funeral arrangements, wills & death certificates. A history of her family. Kathy’s signature was on documents and correspondence many of us are sadly, wearily all too familiar.
Happily I came across a couple of treasures, early Christmas gifts I prefer to call them.
Among the items belonging to Kathy’s Grandmother were two articles she had saved. As promised I am sharing them with you today.
Kathy wrote this for the December 1984 issue of Seventeen Magazine. She was 20 years old.

I have Kathy’s Mom’s photos I have yet to organize and Kathy’s childhood toys that her Mom saved.
I still have Kathy’s large music collection all on CD, not sure what I can do with these as CD’s are practically an antique technology.
Her films, also on CD, I will keep.
What will happen to all this when I am gone?
Little things do mean a lot and there are lots of them that need attention.
I miss Kathy every day and am grateful to all of you, her fans and friends for your love for her.
PS. I just came across this review of Kathy’s book “Confessions of a Failed Slut.” It warmed my heart.
However dreadful its political class, the US’s fundamentals are overwhelmingly strong.
