Just five days after the storming of the Bastille, the Rev. Thomas Malthus rose to the pulpit with the text from the Gospel of Matthew: “whatsoever you wish that others would do to you, do also for them”. He was, by all accounts, a rather dull preacher, and was seemingly unaffected by the tumultuous events of the revolution taking place over in France. Keep calm and carry on could have been his motto. But within a decade he was to publish a book that would make him possibly among the most cancelled men in history, An Essay on the Principle of Population.
Populations grow exponentially, he argued, but food supply grows in a more linear way. And so, at some point there are more people alive than there is food to support them, whereupon there will be some crisis — plague, famine, war — that will reduce the population so that it comes back into line with the amount of food there is to support it. One way of avoiding this is to take preventative measures to reduce the population, including cutting support for the poor so that they are encouraged to have fewer children. As such, Malthus famously opposed the Poor Laws of the 18th century, a primitive form of welfare provision.

Hate preacher Anjem Choudary has called for jihadis to “wake up” and target British troops, following Prince Harry’s admission that he had killed 25 members of the Taliban.
The 55-year-old Islamist, who was jailed for terror offences in 2016, accused the Duke of Sussex of being a “Muslim killer” and said he had shown his “true colours”.
Prince Harry made the comments in his forthcoming memoir, Spare, in which he recalled his time serving as an Apache helicopter pilot in Afghanistan.

Jordan Peterson isn’t the only one whose free speech is under threat
Free speech is under increasing attack in Canada. Over the past decade, ideologically emboldened political leaders, activists, and professional regulators have narrowed the field of allowable discourse and sought to punish any expression that ventures outside it.
The latest threat to free speech in Canada involves an Ontario College of Psychologists (OCP) investigation of clinical psychologist Jordan Peterson for allegedly harming various individuals for his public comments on Twitter and The Joe Rogan Experience podcast. Examples of Peterson’s supposed crimes on social media include calling for an end to unscientific, discriminatory vaccine mandates, retweeting Canada’s Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre, and lambasting Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau.

Here’s a jolly thought to start the year: humanity is on its way to extinction due to a drastic decline in sperm counts. Men’s reproductive health is in such a parlous state that it won’t be long until nobody can conceive a child unassisted.
That, anyway, is the argument that’s become a perennial: every year or so — most recently just at the end of 2022 — a new sperm-counting study emerges and reignites the fears that we’re biologically condemned to extinction. How anxious should we be?

The one thing we know about President Joe Biden’s border policy is that migrants don’t fear it. Those who get caught often cross the border with Mexico illegally again — and get caught again.
As for Biden, he has avoided the border during his first two years in office. That’s about to end. The president told reporters Wednesday he intends to visit the southwest border as he participates in the North American Leaders’ Summit in Mexico City on Jan. 9 through 10. Details to come.
