Poll: Large Majority of Germans Want Negotiations Between Ukraine and Russia Now
A new opinion poll has revealed, among other things, that a substantial majority of German citizens think that Ukrainians should immediately begin negotiations with Russia to finally bring an end to the war, which has just entered its eleventh month, and which has claimed the lives of tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands.
The survey, carried out by UK market research and data analytics firm YouGov on behalf of Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA), has shown that 55% of German are in favor of Ukraine beginning peace talks with Russia now, with just 27% saying it is not the appropriate time for peace talks, the radio broadcaster Deutschlandfunk reports.
Although the wish for peace talks prevails among voters of every political party represented in the Bundestag, Germany’s lawmaking body, the connection with a voter’s preferred party is certainly worth noting.

Privacy Office Unaware of Public Health’s Social Media Data Grab to Target Vaccine Hesitant
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner (OPC) said on Dec. 29 it was unaware of a Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) program to collect vast swaths of online data from Canadians to understand vaccine hesitancy and then target the individuals with tailored messaging to try changing their minds.
“I am not aware of any interactions between our Office and PHAC on this specific initiative,” said OPC spokesperson Tobi Cohen in a statement.

Putin and Xi look to increase military cooperation

Russia has sought to ramp up its political and military ties with its key ally Beijing since Moscow faces unprecedented Western sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine.

COVID-19 travel restrictions for China arrivals ‘not effective,’ ‘little bit absurd’: infectious disease experts
Testing requirements implemented on travellers arriving from China due to the country’s surge in COVID-19 cases are “ineffective” and “a little bit absurd,” according to two infectious disease experts.
Following the easing of COVID-19 polices in China, which was quickly followed by a spike in cases, the U.S., Japan, India, South Korea, Taiwan and Italy announced testing requirements for all travellers entering from China in the past week.
The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) said it was monitoring the situation on Thursday.
FTX assets worth $3.5bn held by Bahamas securities regulator
The Bahamas securities regulator has said it has seized assets worth $3.5bn (£2.9bn) from the failed cryptocurrency exchange FTX and plans to return them to creditors and former customers.
The Securities Commission of the Bahamas said it had transferred all digital assets under the custody or control of FTX Digital Markets, a Bahamas subsidiary of the FTX operation, to its own digital wallets for “safekeeping”.

‘Enough Is Enough’: Ford Calls for Federal Bail Reform Following OPP Officer’s Death
Ontario Premier Doug Ford on Dec. 29 echoed the words of Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Commissioner Thomas Carrique by calling for certain reforms to the federal justice system, particularly regarding bail applications, when commenting on the recent death of an on-duty OPP officer.
“Too many innocent people have lost their lives at the hands of dangerous criminals who should have been behind bars—not on our streets,” Ford said in a statement.
