How Ottawa’s zero-emission vehicle mandate might affect auto prices

It’s no secret the price of cars has risen dramatically in the past two years, which might leave buyers wondering this holiday season if auto prices are about to come down, or if they’re only headed higher.

Auto prices came into focus anew on Wednesday when Environment Canada released its long awaited zero-emission vehicle mandates, which dictate that 20 per cent of all new cars sold in Canada by 2026 be clean vehicles, rising to 60 per cent by 2030, and 100 per cent by 2035. Zero-emission means battery-powered electric vehicles, unless other technology suddenly emerges.

No point buying an EV if you can’t charge it. But then that’s likely the plan.

Sam Bankman-Fried’s ex Caroline Ellison faced 110 years in jail before plea

Disgraced FTX crypto mogul Sam Bankman-Fried’s ex-girlfriend Caroline Ellison was facing up to 110 years in prison before she agreed to cooperate with the federal government, her plea agreement shows.

The former Alameda hedge fund CEO, 28, pleaded guilty to federal fraud charges in an agreement signed on Monday.

The agreement also indicates that Ellison and FTX co-founder Gary Wang had agreed to “cooperate fully” with the feds, in exchange for which they will likely get much lighter sentences.

It appears prosecutors want Sam’s butt in a sling as the pleas to date specifically contradict the Mini-Madoff’s dindunuffin narrative.

It will be interesting to watch if this goes to trial. What if any sentence will be handed the Democrat’s 2nd largest donor?

Judge kept FTX execs’ plea deals secret to get founder to US

NEW YORK (AP) — A judge kept secret that two of Sam Bankman-Fried’s closest associates had turned against him so the cryptocurrency entrepreneur wouldn’t get spooked and fight extradition from the Bahamas, according to court transcripts made public Friday.

U.S. prosecutors in New York waited until Bankman-Fried, the founder of the collapsed crypto exchange FTX, was in FBI custody before revealing that his business partners, Carolyn Ellison and Gary Wang, had secretly pleaded guilty to fraud charges and were cooperating, which can earn them leniency at sentencing.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams announced the guilty pleas when Bankman-Fried was in the air late Wednesday.

Supermarkets continue to increase profits on back of inflation, data shows

Canada’s big three supermarket chains have continued to increase their profits on the back of record high grocery prices, a new Star analysis has found.

Loblaw, Empire (Sobeys) and Metro have all reported even bigger profits and profit margins than they did six months ago, when the Star published an investigation into grocery inflation.

If their profit margins had stayed where they were before the first COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, the three supermarket chains would have made almost $1 billion less in gross profit over the past year, according to their own published financial statements.

I will assume for the sake of civility that the WHO genuinely believes that the COVID vaccine is safe and effective. I will even assume that for most people the vaccine is safe, and at least somewhat effective in reducing the likelihood of severe disease in people likely to become deadly ill from COVID, such as the very old and very sick.

Touchscreens, conveyor belts: McDonald’s opens first largely automated location

The first mostly non-human-run McDonald’s is open for business just outside Fort Worth, Texas.

At just one location so far, customers can drive to the golden arches and expect to be served a Big Mac or a Happy Meal by a food and beverage conveyor instead of an actual, real-life human being.

A spokesperson for McDonald’s told the Guardian that the test concept “is not fully automated”, emphasizing that the restaurant does employ a team comparable to that of a traditional store.

My local Shoppers Drug Mart is making it so inconvenient to use the only cashier they ever have on duty that people are walking out in frustration as they can’t or won’t transact their business with the automated tellers.

There’s No Shortage of Immigrant Workers

… Some may respond, “If Americans won’t work, let’s bring in immigrants who will.” But consider the implications of this argument. It’s well established that the decline in labor-force participation is associated with a host of undesirable outcomes: substance abuse, welfare dependency, poor mental health, crime, lack of family formation, and early death. The fiscal costs associated with all these problems are paid for by taxpayers. Furthermore, the social disorder that plagues communities where many men do not work isn’t confined to those areas. To be sure, a significant share of the millions of the less-educated Americans who have dropped out of the labor force have made poor choices in life. But they are our fellow Americans, and we have a greater responsibility for them than for prospective immigrants overseas who want to come here.

Brandon del Pozo, a former New York City cop and now Brown University scholar, says gun deaths among young men in those city’s ghettos are worse than seen by troops deployed in America’s war on terror.

Del Pozo, who started out in law enforcement patrolling streets in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, called his research an ‘urgent wake-up call’ for tackling gun crime and murder rates in the grittiest cities.
