Demand for private security is booming in Minneapolis.

In June 2020, the Minneapolis city council famously vowed to defund the police department. Though their plans fell through, the fully funded MPD is nonetheless struggling. More than 250 officers have resigned or retired since then. Earlier this year, the Minneapolis supreme court ruled that the city has a duty to staff the MPD with a minimum of 731 sworn officers, but the department is at least 100 officers short of that target. Meantime, crime has spiked, with 96 homicides in 2021—doubling the number in 2019 and tying a 1995 record.

Child rapist Azhar Ali Mehmood refused parole for murder by arson of grooming victim, her sister and mother

A taxi driver who murdered two teenagers and their mother has for a second time been denied parole.

Azhar Ali Mehmood, then 26, killed 16-year-old Lucy Lowe, the mother of his child, as well as her 17-year-old sister and mother Eileen Linda Lowe, 49.

… Lucy was legally incapable of consent when she was targeted and groomed by Mehmood at 12 years old.

Ukraine war: Russian retreat exposes military weaknesses

“You have no idea how tired I am to say hello to someone in the morning and then have to identify his remains later the same day,” one Russian officer serving as a marine in Ukraine reportedly confided over the phone to a former colleague back home, who published it on his Telegram channel.

“Just yesterday two of my sniper groups were destroyed by a tank. Three men died instantly, the fourth one fought for his life for an hour and a half, another one in critical condition was taken to hospital. We have hardly any men left and we are holding a front line dozens of kilometres long.”

Harry and Meghan ‘uninvited to state reception at Buckingham Palace on Sunday which is for working royals only’

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were ‘uninvited’ to a state reception for world leaders and foreign royals tomorrow evening, it was reported last night.

It is thought the couple received an invitation to the event, hosted by King Charles and the Queen Consort, earlier in the week.

But Prince Harry and his wife Meghan are now unlikely to attend after officials at Buckingham Palace insisted the reception was for working royals only, it is understood.

At a lunchtime campaign stop in the town of Fergus, Ont., in April, the lineup to see Pierre Poilievre wound around the hallways of a recreation centre.

Two nights earlier, his downtown Toronto rally finished with hundreds standing in a serpentine line for 90 minutes, waiting to take a picture with him. Many hadn’t been to a political event before.

It’s a scene replicated in towns and cities across the country, with a cross-section of traditional conservatives, trucker-convoy fans and 30-somethings worried about home prices coming out in droves to see Mr. Poilievre.

When asked by the show’s new conservative host, Alyssa Farah Griffin, if she believed there should be any limitation on abortion, Abrams said: ‘Viability is the metric and that if a woman’s health or life is endanger then viability extends until the time of birth.’

The double agent responsible for smuggling Shamima Begum into Syria has been released from jail in Turkey, it emerged on Friday, and may be granted political asylum in Canada.

Mohammed al-Rashed, a Turkish-based double agent working for the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) as well as smuggling recruits into Syria for Isil, was freed on August 5, according to sources in Canada.

Syrian Al-Rashed’s role in helping Ms Begum and her two friends into Syria emerged after he was arrested by the Turkish authorities in 2015 and subsequently jailed for terrorism and smuggling offences. It was only then that CSIS told Scotland Yard about its double agent.

Fort Macleod councillor, 2 other ‘key participants’ charged in Coutts border blockades

New charges have been laid against protesters involved in the Coutts border blockade earlier this year, including Marco Van Huigenbos, a Fort Macleod town councillor.

Van Huigenbos, 32, who was a protest organizer, as well as Alex Van Herk, 53, and George Janzen, 43, each face a count of mischief over $5,000.

In a written release, RCMP called the three men “key participants of the Coutts border blockade,” which took place between Jan. 29 and Feb. 15.

“The global liquefied natural gas (LNG) market is increasingly well-integrated, and regional demand shifts can help balance otherwise tight markets. This redirection of flows serves the interests of all parties involved,” Nicholas Kumleben, director of energy research at macroeconomic advisory firm Greenmantle, told DW.

Pierre Poilievre’s path to a broader Conservative tent runs through the 905

Jean Charest’s main pitch to become leader of the Conservative Party of Canada – his only pitch, really – was that only he would be able to beat Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a federal election: that his version of moderate conservatism wouldn’t alienate centrist voters the way Pierre Poilievre’s convoy cheerleading and weird flirtations with right-wing conspiracies would, and that his record in Quebec would help the party win crucial support in the province. The hitch in Mr. Charest’s plan, of course, was that in order to win the country, he first needed to win the party, and the party obviously wasn’t interested in Mr. Charest’s bland rice pudding of an attempted political movement.
