No, the energy crisis is not some unforeseeable consequence of the Ukrainian war. It is the result of years of wishful thinking, preening and short-termism. We sit on 300 years’ supply of coal. We have rich pockets of gas trapped in rocks beneath Central Scotland, Yorkshire, Lancashire and Sussex. We have as good a claim as any country to have invented civil nuclear power. Yet, incredibly, we face blackouts and energy rationing.

Toward a saner conversation about driving in America

Cars seem to be an emerging front in the American culture wars. Consider the reaction to an essay by Carlton Reid, written for the website Works in Progress, arguing that ubiquitous driving does not necessarily create happy, healthy communities. “Cars may seem dominant in many towns and cities right now, but that’s because choices were made to allow such dominance,” Reid noted. “Choices can be remade; minds can be changed.” That quote generated a backlash among conservative critics, who argued that the worldview it represented would “force serfdom on America” and coerce people into “a pod in some blue cesspool.” Any revision to our existing land-use and street-design regimes, the thinking implied, would make the American way of life impossible.

Gaza: The Usual Suspects Condemn Israel

A week ago US President Joe Biden ordered the elimination of Al Qaida boss Ayman al-Zawahiri in Kabul. A few days later Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid ordered the elimination of Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) commander Tayseer al-Jabari in Gaza. These were two of a kind: mass killers whose sole purpose was to inflict pain, death and destruction on ordinary decent people to bring about their vision of Islamic conquest.

Commenting on the killing of Zawahiri, UN Secretary General’s spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the UN was “committed to fighting against terrorism and strengthening international cooperation in countering that threat”.

Senator Ted Cruz had a chance to question FBI Director Christopher Wray on Thursday and asked him why the bureau is classifying some classic symbols of American patriotism as indicators of militias and violent extremism.

Millions of Americans already view the FBI with an air of suspicion. The fact that they have designated these symbols in this way will only make matters worse.

Mohammedan terrorist Momin Khawaja denied day parole

The Parole Board of Canada’s appeal division has denied the parole request of convicted terrorist Momin Khawaja, saying he has yet to take responsibility for his crimes.

In a recently released decision, the appeal division upheld the parole board’s rejection of Khawaja’s application for day parole in February.

Khawaja, 43, has been behind bars for 18 years after being arrested in 2004 and charged with seven terrorism-related offences.

The headline in The Atlantic read this way: “The DOJ Must Prosecute Trump.”

The authors, Establishment lawyers one and all, want Trump criminally prosecuted because of the “evidence” presented by the nakedly partisan, Democrat-run January 6 Committee.

This is the popular theme in today’s media, a guessing game of will-he-or-will-he-not be prosecuted.

When Kermit the Frog found El Sleezo Cafe, a stereotypically Mexican joint in 1979’s “The Muppet Movie,” he nervously muttered, “Foreign food … but a man’s gotta eat.” Never mind that the house special turned out to be frog’s legs — such a scene today would go straight to the cutting-room floor and the creators exiled to Cancelville.

Once upon a time, it was permissible to make light-hearted fun of cuisines that were unfamiliar or exotic to film audiences.

Pro-Russian officials ‘assassinated’ in Kherson ahead of Ukraine offensive

Ukrainian partisans appear to have launched a campaign of assassinations of pro-Russian officials in occupied Kherson ahead of a planned offensive to recapture the region.

On Saturday, Vitaly Gur, the Moscow-installed deputy head of the town of Nova Kakhovka, near Kherson, was shot as he stepped out of his apartment block. He died on his way to hospital in Crimea, according to Russian media.

Alec Baldwin is among stars who’ve been condemned for supporting Anne Heche after the actress crashed into a house after a 100mph joyride, allegedly while drunk.

In a video posted to Instagram on Saturday, Baldwin called Heche ‘an amazingly talented woman’ as he asked his fans to send their ‘support and love’ to the 53-year-old actress who is currently in stable condition at a local hospital.

‘Hey, I just want to send out my best wishes and all my love to Anne Heche,’ said Baldwin, who is continuing to face scrutiny over his fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of his film last year.

Germany braces for social unrest over energy prices

German officials have expressed fears that a worst-case winter of energy problems could prompt an extremist backlash. How bad things get may depend on how well they manage the crisis – in policy and perception.

State and federal Lawmakers in Germany are exploring a sweeping set of measures to save energy, from turning off street lights to lowering building temperatures; and they are pleading with the public to cut consumption at home.

Whether those efforts spur a call to solidarity or a call to arms won’t become clear until the cold sets in and bills come due. Yet Chancellor Olaf Scholz is not in a wait-and-see mood, telling public broadcaster, ARD, last month that spiraling heating costs are a “powder keg for society.”

An “Extremist Backlash.” So wanting to keep your home heated and food on the table at prices that haven’t been juiced sky-high by Green-Scam legislation makes you an “Extremist” in Germany.

Israeli Defense Force kills ‘entire top brass’ of Palestinian Islamic Jihad

The Israel Defense Force Operations Directorate announced Saturday that all the Palestinian Islamic Jihad leaders had been killed following the death of Khaled Mansour.

“This organization tried to carry out a deadly attack against Israeli citizens and IDF soldiers by launching an anti-tank guided missile, to kill civilians and soldiers,” Maj. Gen. Oded Basiuk said in a press conference Saturday. “We hit and foiled the chain [who sought to] execute this attack.”
