Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby lost her reelection bid to defense attorney Ivan Bates in the Democratic primary after she was indicted by a grand jury on federal charges alleging that she used coronavirus hardship as a reason to take money out of her city retirement account.
The Associated Press called the race in favor of Ivan Bates, a defense attorney, on Friday night. Bates is a former prosecutor in Baltimore who served from 1996 to 2002 before becoming a defense attorney.

Depression is not a chemical imbalance in the brain and scientists have no idea how antidepressants work, a review by University College London has concluded.
Although one in six adults in England are currently prescribed antidepressants – most of which act by maintaining serotonin levels – the new analysis suggests depression is not actually caused by low levels of serotonin.
Instead, depression may be more strongly equated with negative life events which lower mood, the review found.

Thursday, Statistics Canada released new vehicle sales figures for the first three months of 2022. Some of the numbers might surprise you.
“New gasoline-powered vehicles posted the largest decline, with 13.2 per cent fewer new registrations in 2022” than during the same three months in 2021, “followed by diesel-powered vehicles, down 11.8 per cent.”
Conversely, registrations of new fully electric vehicles were up 55 per cent.

In a July 28th New York Times story of the excruciating symptoms and lack of care available for those with monkeypox in that city, the sexuality of the men profiled isn’t referenced until 11 paragraphs into the story, and even then it refers to them as “men who have sex with men,” which is technically correct but dodgy. Moreover, the article, which supposedly addresses barriers to care, ignores the fact that gay men routinely experience apathy and even judgment from health providers.
Other media stories, and statements from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, have mentioned monkeypox cases in the context of “the LGBT community.” Really? Should lesbians be lining up for a monkeypox vaccine, whenever the heck they become widely available? This is happening to gay men. Say it.
Pictures of suspected accomplices in Rabih Alkhalil escape were stock images, RCMP say
Coquitlam RCMP are still actively searching for Rabih “Robby” Alkhalil, who escaped from the North Fraser Pre-trial Centre on Thursday — but the photos they shared of his alleged accomplices were stock images, they said.
“It is believed that the suspects who helped Alkhalil escape bear a close resemblance to the photos they left behind, but those images are not them,” said Const. Deanna Law with Coquitlam RCMP in a statement Saturday afternoon.
Ontario farmers say Canada’s fertilizer tariff punishes them for Russia’s war
As the federal government continues its efforts to punish Russia economically for its invasion of Ukraine, Ontario agriculture groups and representatives of Canada’s fertilizer sector are warning that cash crop farmers and consumers are the ones bearing the cost.
In March, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland and International Trade Minister Mary Ng announced that in retaliation for Russia’s illegal invasion, Canada was imposing a 35 per cent general tariff on virtually all Russian imports — including nitrogen fertilizer that Eastern Canadian growers rely on to boost crop yields.
The timing — mere weeks from the start of planting season — couldn’t have been worse. Farmers make often risky decisions about what crops to grow and place orders for seed and fertilizer months in advance.

Nearly 40 per cent of Canadians are not confident the Canadian Armed Forces will “appropriately” deal with allegations of sexual misconduct, according to internal National Defence polling reviewed by Global News.

KYIV — Two Americans, a Canadian and a Swedish citizen were killed this week when a Russian tank opened fire on them during an hourslong battle at the frontline in the eastern Donetsk region, their commander confirmed exclusively to POLITICO.
Ruslan Miroshnichenko, the foreign fighters’ commander, said Saturday that the Americans killed were Luke “Skywalker” Lucyszyn and Bryan Young. He said they were killed alongside Emile-Antoine Roy-Sirois of Canada and Edvard Selander Patrignani of Sweden on July 18.

Pope Francis is set to arrive in Canada on Sunday for a six-day tour, marking the first papal visit to the country in 20 years.
The pope is scheduled to travel to Edmonton, Quebec City and Iqaluit, where he will meet with Indigenous leaders and residential school survivors. He is expected to deliver an apology for the Catholic Church’s role in the residential school system.

Democrats went all out to sell and promote the story of a 10-year-old rape victim in Ohio who supposedly had to seek an abortion out of state based on Ohio’s abortion ban in the wake of the overturning of Roe. v. Wade.
They huffed and they puffed, claiming that the case was an argument for abortion on demand. Never mind that the state attorney general said that was nonsense, given that the health of the 10-year-old mother was at stake. Much was made of some conservatives who initially doubted the story, which turned out to be real.
