Death for “Blasphemers” in Pakistan

On July 4, 2022, a Christian mechanic who had been imprisoned for the last five years, awaiting trial under a false accusation of “blasphemy” for allegedly insulting the Muslim prophet Muhammad, was sentenced to death by hanging in a Pakistani court.

Five years earlier, on June 5, 2017, Ashfaq Masih, 34, had gotten into a quarrel with Muhammad Naveen, a rival who had established a mechanics’ workshop near Masih’s. According to Masih’s not guilty plea, Muhammad “was jealous because my business was running better,” and, after their altercation, “threatened me with dire consequences.”

Trump aide Dr Deborah Birx claims Covid ‘came out of the box ready to infect’ – claiming virus was being worked on by scientists in a Chinese lab

Former US President Donald Trump’s Covid adviser believes the virus could have leaked from a lab where it was being worked on by scientists.

Infectious diseases expert Dr Deborah Birx told The Mail on Sunday that coronavirus ‘came out of the box ready to infect’ when it emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2020. The adviser said most viruses take months or years to become highly infectious to humans. But, Dr Birx said, Covid ‘was already more infectious than flu when it first arrived’.

She said that meant Covid was either an ‘abnormal thing of nature’ or that Chinese scientists were ‘working on coronavirus vaccines’ and became infected.

Ukraine moves closer to getting F-15 and F-16 fighter jets as Washington approves training programme

The US has been cautious about sending equipment to Ukraine because it is worried that American weapons may be used in Russian territory

Ukraine moved closer to adding more modern American fighter jets to its air force this week after US lawmakers agreed to pay for pilots to be trained on F-15s and F-16s in the States.

The US Congress approved a Defence Authorisation Act this week that contained a $100 million amendment to help shift Ukraine’s military hardware away from its ageing Soviet-era technology, which currently includes MiG-29s and Sukhoi planes.

“Ukrainian pilots are going to be taught to fly F-15 and F-16 fighters in the USA,” Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian Presidential Administration, said on Saturday.

Freshii’s ‘virtual cashier’ is bad omen for Canada labour shortage

In April, Canadian-based fast-food chain Freshii came under intense scrutiny after the company pivoted to serving customers via ‘virtual cashiers’ based in other countries.

Instead of having a Canadian employee take customer orders, Freshii hired employees from Nicaragua, Bolivia and Pakistan to serve customers by screen, at starkly lower hourly wages to the tune of $3.75 US an hour. Of course, Ontario’s minimum wage is $15 an hour.

That horse has left the barn. If it can be automated or offshored it will be.

A Reuters Institute survey found that a rising number of people are avoiding the news or just don’t believe it

This might be just another negative news story. And if it is, there is evidence that many of you will turn away in despair.

The Reuters Institute revealed last month that 42% of Americans actively avoid the news at least some of the time because it grinds them down or they just don’t believe it. Fifteen percent said they disconnected from news coverage altogether. In other countries, such as the UK and Brazil, the numbers selectively avoiding it were even higher.

“In the United States, those who self-identify on the right are far more likely to avoid news because they think it is untrustworthy or biased, but those on the left are more likely to feel overwhelmed, carry feelings of powerlessness, or worry that the news might create arguments,” the institute said.

When Conservatives Lose the Plot

As a conservative profoundly involved in the “culture wars,” I have come to realize that the problem I have is not with liberals, Leftists, apostles of Woke, and other assorted ideologues and disreputables. I expect nothing from them but deceit, vulgarity, hate-spew, and ignorance, and so do not feel especially shocked by their behavior. The problem I have is with conservatives, too many of whom do not appear to fully honor conservative principles and values. They often seem to temporize with their antagonists, can act at times quite autocratically, and are occasionally distressingly superficial in their assessments of contemporary events. Human, all too human, of course; still, one might have thought better of those brave combatants in the political trenches.

WHO may declare monkeypox outbreak a global health emergency

The World Health Organisation says they will reconvene their monkeypox committee to decide on if it should be considered a ‘global health emergency’.

The UN health agency are now aware of 9,200 cases in 63 countries in the last update issued on Tuesday, with the UK recording 1,735 cases between May 6 and July 11 this year.

UK Health Security Agency figures show that the majority were Londoners, with 1,229 reported in the capital.
