Former Guantánamo prisoner on trial in France for extremism

An Algerian preacher who spent eight years in the US-run Guantánamo Bay prison has gone on trial in France for allegedly encouraging several young men to join the Islamic State group.

Saber Lahmar, a 52-year-old Algerian released by the US in 2008 and taken in afterwards by France, has been charged with encouraging jihadists to head to Iraq and Syria to fight for the extremist group in 2015.

Speaking mostly in Arabic at the start of his trial in Paris on Tuesday, Lahmar denied having links to Islamist groups in France and suggested he was being persecuted because of his religion.

Writer’s essay on why she plagiarized in her debut novel about a young black woman is pulled after it’s found she COPIED that too

A writer’s essay explaining why she plagiarized parts of what would have been her debut novel has been deleted after it was revealed she copied that as well.

Jumi Bello’s book The Leaving was scheduled to come out on July 12 and had appeared on several ‘most anticipated’ lists, according to Publisher’s Market, when its publisher Riverhead Books suddenly scrapped it in December.

The 30-year-old has now revealed the reason the book was abruptly canceled when it was in its final stages was because she admitted to the New York City-based publishing company she had plagiarized parts of the novel.

Knife-wielding ISIS fanatics execute 20 Christians in Nigeria ‘to avenge the killing of the group’s leaders in the Middle East’

ISIS extremists have callously executed 20 Christians in Nigeria in a bloodthirsty rampage to ‘avenge the killing of the group’s leaders in the Middle East’.

The terrorist group published footage of the ruthless killings, showing the masked knife and gun-wielding fanatics standing behind their kneeling victims.

The militants carried out the merciless executions in Borno state where rival Islamist groups Boko Haram and Islamic State in West Africa (ISWAP) have been abducting, looting and killing on a huge scale.

Rust: Producers of Alec Baldwin film deny safety failures over shooting

The producers of Alec Baldwin film Rust have disputed an official report saying they were indifferent to gun safety before an on-set shooting tragedy.

The film’s cinematographer was killed and its director injured when a gun held by Baldwin fired last October.

Last month, the New Mexico Environment Department imposed its maximum fine on Rust Movie Productions for “serious and wilful” failures.

But the company has said it “enforced all applicable safety protocols”.

Quebec asks Trudeau to close Roxham Road, says province can’t handle influx of benefit shoppers

Quebec is asking the federal government to close a wooded border crossing south of Montreal because the province can’t handle the number of asylum seekers entering the country.

Premier Francois Legault says more than 100 refugee claimants are entering Quebec every day from the United States through a rural path called Roxham Road.

The popular unofficial border crossing was closed when the pandemic hit in March 2020 and reopened last November.

IDF Chief of Staff announces investigation of death of Al Jazeera journalist, stresses soldiers came under heavy fire.

“Since the incident, the IDF has been examining the circumstances leading to the death of the journalist, Ms. Shireen Abu Akleh. The IDF offer to conduct a joint investigation with the Palestinians was not answered. The possibility that Ms. Abu Akleh died as a result of Palestinian gunfire is also being examined in light of extensive footage circulating on social media showing Palestinian gunmen firing recklessly and indiscriminately in every direction.

There’s an unseemly rush to get the poor woman buried.

John Robson: Congrats to the Trudeau Liberals for making their dream of high gas prices come true

The public policy landscape is littered with the wreckage of ideas that didn’t work out the way their architects intended. It might convince lesser mortals than our politicians and their claque that good intentions are not sufficient. But at least they meant well. Which you can’t say about unaffordable gasoline.

Assisted deaths of two Canadian women living in poverty puts spotlight on euthanasia laws

Critics argue laws are being misused to punish the poor but experts say cases represent country’s failure to care for its most vulnerable citizens

After pleading unsuccessfully for affordable housing to help ease her chronic health condition, a Canadian woman ended her life in February under the country’s assisted-suicide laws. Another woman, suffering from the same condition and also living on disability payments, has nearly reached final approval to end her life.

The two high-profile cases have prompted disbelief and outrage, and shone a light on Canada’s right-to-die laws, which critics argue are being misused to punish the poor and infirm. In late April, the Spectator ran a story with the provocative headline: Why is Canada euthanising the poor?

But medical and legal experts caution that oversimplified media coverage of the cases fail to capture the realities of the system – and warn that sensationalist coverage of a handful of “extreme” cases ignores a larger crisis in the country’s healthcare systems.

Montreal police investigating if anti-pipeline anarchists torched cars of RBC executive who was an ex-Tory minister

OTTAWA – Montreal police are investigating if anti-pipeline anarchists are behind a fire that destroyed two luxury vehicles at the home of former Conservative Minister and current RBC executive Michael Fortier.

Should be 1st on list.

The incident is just the latest of a rash of attacks against Royal Bank of Canada and its executives’ properties over the last few months by anarchists opposed to the organization’s funding of the Coastal GasLink natural gas pipeline in British Columbia.

They claim to be acting in solidarity with Wet’suwet’en land defenders, who oppose the project.

Ukraine war: Putin preparing for long haul, US intelligence says

Vladimir Putin is preparing for a long war in Ukraine, with even victory in the east potentially not ending the conflict, US intelligence has warned.

The warning comes as fierce fighting continues in the east, where Russia is trying to take territory.

Moscow refocused its troops on capturing the Donbas region after Ukraine resisted attempts to take its capital, Kyiv.

But despite this, its forces remain in a stalemate, US intelligence said.

She added that the Russian president was “probably” counting on US and EU support for Ukraine to weaken as inflation, food shortages and energy prices got worse.

And just in time from the CBC – prepare for the forever war!

Can the West continue arming Ukraine at the current rate?

If the West is in it for the long haul, defence contractors have work and hiring to do

I cannot support a war in which each side continues to trade in oil and gas “so as to not upset the economy” or others exploit the conflict to further their green-scam agenda.

I feel we are being played, told to accept uninterrupted commerce between so-called “belligerents” as the new normal.

Every war has it’s profiteers, typically they exploit their own and are not in cahoots with the “sworn enemy of whatever.”

“Viva GazProm” just doesn’t sound right.

CSIS was concerned about ̷e̷x̷t̷r̷e̷m̷i̷s̷m̷ uppity citizens in relation to trucker convoy, director says

CSIS was concerned by the threat of ideologically motivated, violent extremism and the potential for serious harmful acts in relation to the trucker convoy, says the head of the national intelligence agency.

David Vigneault, Canadian Security Intelligence Service director, told a special committee of parliamentarians examining the invocation of the federal Emergencies Act on Tuesday that this form of extremism, which he referred to as IMVE, represents a significant national-security threat.

… “IMVE is a threat that thrives on division and festers in the online space. But the hateful online rhetoric associated with these views is spilling over into the real world.”

In the leadup to the convoy, CSIS closely monitored known IMVE actors to assess any threat of serious acts of violence, Mr. Vigneault said, adding that this was informed by context. For example, he said, the intelligence agency has observed a rise in anti-authority, violent rhetoric, particularly in relation to pandemic public-health measures.

God Forbid anyone tells Junior where to stuff it. Vigneault is the most political of CSIS directors to date, dutifully criminalizing dissent on behalf of the Liberal Party. Go incognito.

Amazon pulls sexually explicit childrenswear from its Canadian site following complaint

Amazon has pulled from its e-commerce website several children’s clothing items displaying a sexually explicit message, following a CBC News investigation.

The items, sold by third-party sellers, included a dress, T-shirt, summer hat and hoodies boldly displaying the message “I love c–k,” using a heart emoji. Sometimes a rooster emoji replaced the word, “c–k,” which is another word for a rooster and slang for a male appendage.

Demographics: Deglobalization Will Fix Climate Change

“We are on the verge of something fundamentally different right now, yes. But a lot of it looks more like the world before 1945 than the world of the future.” There is good news coming out of the global population collapse.

A little while back, a friend introduced me to the work of developmental economist Peter Zeihan. He identifies as a socially conservative libertarian but seems to be slightly further to the left than that. His science is spot on and he presents it in a way that’s agenda-free. He tells it like it is, is known for his accurate forecasts, and I think we need to listen to him. Here is a recent and very concise presentation of his scholarship.
