You can wage Jihad on Twitter, but don’t mess with gender

Islamists can justify wife beating and call for killing millions of French on Twitter, but do not dare say “men cannot get pregnant” or you will be blocked.

Libertarian magazine Reason compared it to George Orwell’s “Ministry of Truth”. To ensure “the safety of users”, or to protect them from incorrect thoughts and words (Islamophobic, homophobic, migrantphobic, transophobic …), Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey had seen fit to create an internal consulting group with a disturbing name: “Council for trust and security”. It may take a few years to figure out that it is tasked, as in Orwell’s 1984, with eliminating forbidden words and thoughts, so let’s look at what it has been doing.

The famous American satire site, The Babylon Bee, has just been suspended from Twitter. It had violated “trust and security”. Its director, Seth Dillon, said they were banned for a tweet mocking Rachel Levine, who identifies as a transgender and US public health service officer. “Babylon Bee’s Man of the Year is Rachel Levine,” reads the tweet.

What TV is telling Russians — and why they believe it

Shows about western terrorism in Crimea are aired alongside videos about Ukrainian shrines to Hitler

If you want to understand how Russians see the world, it helps to watch Russian TV. The Kremlin’s control over the airwaves permeates every part of Russia’s television schedules. There are no longer soap operas or series during waking hours, just relentless TV shows about Russia’s place in the world. The popular and execrable “news” discussion show 60 Minutes now often lasts two to three hours. It is as if General Hospital and Days of our Lives were replaced with 200 minutes of state propaganda.

Such shows depict Russia’s horrific assault on Ukrainian towns, cities and people as a special military operation. They are punctuated with clips of Vladimir Putin celebrating a successful and preemptive mission to free Donbas from genocidal Ukrainian butchers. Russians and non-Russians alike see the human misery and detritus of an unprovoked invasion by a fascistic army — except Russians think that army belongs to Ukraine.

Canada under the gun as NATO allies to present defence spending plans by June

BRUSSELS — Canada faces fresh pressure to increase its defence spending as the head of the NATO military alliance says leaders have agreed to present plans by June on investing billions of additional dollars into their respective militaries.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg revealed the new pledge at the end of an extraordinary meeting in Brussels, where leaders from across the alliance had gathered for the second time in a month to discuss Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

While all NATO members pledged in 2014 to spend two per cent of their national gross domestic product in the next decade, Stoltenberg told reporters after the meeting that allies have now agreed to “redouble” those efforts.

The Biden administration says the U.S. will accept 100,000 refugees from Ukraine.

BRUSSELS — The United States will accept 100,000 Ukrainian refugees into the country and will donate $1 billion to help European countries deal with the surge of migrants fleeing Russia’s invasion, a person familiar with the decision said on Thursday.

More than three million Ukrainians have poured into Poland and other countries as the forces of President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia have bombarded civilian areas in cities across Ukraine.

United States officials have repeatedly said they expect that most Ukrainian refugees will want to stay in Europe, close to their homes. But President Biden, who is in Brussels for three back-to-back summits with allies, is expected to announce that the administration will accept 100,000 refugees who want to come to America.

Ottawa convoy deemed national security threat a week before Emergencies Act: police

Ontario police deemed the so-called “Freedom Convoy” a threat to national security one week before the federal government invoked the Emergencies Act.

Police have described the unprecedented invocation of the legislation as “critical” to their efforts to end the demonstrations, which saw participants encamped in downtown residential streets for three weeks.

Yet it is unclear at this point why it took seven days before the federal government invoked the Emergencies Act, or why it took police an additional week beyond that to begin clearing out the convoy.

Good luck getting Canadians to give up working from home

The longer Canadians have worked at home the more they’ve learned to love it, and that is going to make it harder for employers to drag them back to the office, according to a new poll.

A large majority of Canadians (79 per cent) who have worked from home for the past two years are now “attached to their arrangement,” and “prefer to be doing it all or most of the time,” said the survey, conducted in early March by the Angus Reid Institute and the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. and released this week.

Home Depot Responds After Worksheet On ‘White Privilege’ And ‘Racism’ Goes Viral

Home Depot released a statement Wednesday addressing controversy about a hyper-progressive worksheet on “white privilege” and “racism” that recently went viral online.

The company acknowledged that the worksheet is a “resource” in its Canadian division but noted that it’s “not part of any required programming,” nor was it “created or approved by our corporate diversity, equity and inclusion department.”

Canadian Armed Forces too white and too male senior officers say

Our armed forces would not allow a photo like this today as it would be certain to offend the racialized crossdresser community.

Too white and too male, the Canadian Armed Forces is understaffed and struggling to find recruits, senior officers said Wednesday.

“A lack of inclusion is a major barrier to both retention and recruitment,” said Lt.-Gen. Jennie Carignan, the CAF’s chief of professional conduct and culture, a role created by the federal government last year.

“Culture change is a ‘must have,’ rather than a ‘nice to have,’ and not only for our current, but also for our future defence team members.”

As the Russian invasion of Ukraine brings renewed focus on the military strength of NATO countries, the CAF is currently short thousands of members. About 71 per cent of its workforce is now made up of white men, a demographic that makes up just 39 per cent of the civilian workforce, said Maj.-Gen. Lise Bourgon, the CAF’s acting head of military personnel.

Yea we’ll be a lot better off with a CAF composed of Transvestite Muslim Lesbians.

Russian soldier reportedly runs over commander with tank in protest

A Russian soldier reportedly drove over his colonel with a tank — while two other service members were caught venting about strongman Vladimir Putin’s “bulls—” invasion of Ukraine amid reports of heavy losses.

The Russian soldier who was behind the wheel of the tank “blamed the commander of the group, Col. Yury Medvedev, for the deaths of his friends,” Ukrainian journalist Roman Tsimbalyuk said on Facebook.

There are numerous pieces floating about purportedly illustrating the breakdown of the Russian army. I am not sure I trust them.

The clip at the end of this post was filmed in April 2021, if you can believe it, but it’s making the rounds on political Twitter today thanks to some new English subtitles that reveal the prescience of the speaker, Alexander Nevzorov. A little googling proves him to be an interesting character, a journalist turned parliamentarian turned filmmaker turned horse-riding enthusiast turned fierce critic of religion and Putin’s government. Some of his specific forecasts about a war between Russia and Ukraine turned out to be on the money, as you’ll see, from the high morale of Ukrainian troops that no one in the Kremlin expected to the shocking haplessness of the Russian air force.
