The Taliban are using detentions, repression, censorship, and killings to tighten their grip on power.

While the world’s attention is focused on Ukraine, Afghanistan has plunged into darkness. The Taliban are tightening their control amid growing reports of detentions, rapes, and summary executions of minorities, rights advocates, women, and people associated with the old government or the new resistance.

In the weeks since Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine, the Taliban have extended bans on many parts of what was once normal life before they took over the country last summer. Clampdowns on media, entertainment, and traditional holidays have been extended as the Taliban revive old practices, such as kidnapping foreigners for political leverage.

I remember the new and improved “Taliban light” yarn the media was telling just last year.

Hundreds of tiny shoes, stuffed animals and flowers began appearing around the Centennial Flame in front of Parliament’s Centre Block last spring, after the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc Nation announced ground-penetrating radar had found the possible remains of about 200 children on the site of a former residential school near Kamloops, B.C.

Maybe they could put the items in a church and burn it down!

Evan Neumann: US Capitol riot suspect gets asylum in Belarus

A California man suspected of taking part in the US Capitol riots last year has been granted asylum in Belarus.

Evan Neumann fled the US after being charged in connection with the riots.

The 48-year-old first settled in Ukraine, before reaching Belarus where he asked for asylum – claiming he faced “political persecution” in the US.

A Belarusian official said Mr Neumann has been granted permission to remain in the country “indefinitely”.

If history is any guide, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau got the better of the deal he made with NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, ensuring the survival of his Liberal government until June 2025.

It’s not surprising since Trudeau, as PM and the senior partner in the negotiations, was playing from a position of strength.

Singh’s hand was much weaker — as the junior partner — and it showed in the final agreement.

Three in 10 Canadians say they would never vote Conservative: Nanos survey

Recent polling from Nanos Research shows Canadians believe a more socially progressive and economically centrist Conservative Party would make it more appealing.

According to the latest poll, commissioned by CTV News, when asked what would be the best path forward for the Conservative Party to make it a more appealing voting choice, 29 per cent of respondents said “be socially progressive and more centrist on economic issues.”

Meanwhile, 30 per cent said they would never vote Conservative.

It would appear the CPC braintrust is ahead of the curve in their quest to be the Liberal party.

Ukrainian woman claims invading Russian soldiers killed, raped civilians

Anastasia Taran, a 30-year-old waitress who escaped Irpin, described how the invasion of the Russian forces has turned the city into “hell,” Euromaidan Press reported.

“There are plenty of Russian soldiers out there who just shoot people who enter private homes and, at best, just kick people out of their homes,” said Taran who now provides tips on Instagram on how to get out of the city.

“They rape women and the dead are just being dumped. They open the basements where people are hiding and shoot them.”

On the surface, the argument turns on whether the desire for a diverse student body trumps many laws and the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which prohibit discrimination and guarantee equal protection to all. The question applies to virtually all universities because they are either public or accept government money.
