Disinformation for profit: scammers cash in on conspiracy theories

Some accounts claiming to support the Canada trucker protests are run by con artists abroad

When Facebook removed dozens of groups dedicated to Canada’s anti-government “Freedom Convoy” protests earlier this month, it didn’t do so because of extremism or conspiracies rife within the protests. It was because the groups were being run by scam artists.

Networks of spammers and profiteers, some based as far afield as Vietnam or Romania, had set up the groups using fake or hacked Facebook accounts in an attempt to make money off of the political turmoil.

Liberal stereotypes hurt black communities

Black History Month was created, in large part, to fight back against stereotypes. The theory advanced by educators like Dr. Carter G. Woodson goes as follows: if people learn more about the rich history of the African diaspora, then black men and women won’t be defined by simplistic or negative depictions of who they are.

Today, some of the stereotypes that harshly impact black communities are rooted in liberal politics. Television, radio, and newspapers offensively caricature black people as anti-police, dependent on big government programs, consumed by historical grievances, accepting of immoral pop culture, incompatible with traditional nuclear family values, and unpatriotic. It’s not a coincidence that these mischaracterizations line up with Democratic Party messaging. US President Joe Biden openly equates the black identity with voting for him.

The Real Terrorist Attack Trudeau Ignored While Cracking Down on the Freedom Convoy

In justifying his invocation of the Emergencies Act and turning Canada into a police state, Justin Trudeau falsely claimed that the Freedom Convoy was “not a peaceful protest” and asserted that “the blockades are harming our economy and endangering public safety.” Unsurprisingly, however, Trudeau’s outrage was selective: on Thursday, Canada suffered a genuine terror attack that was not a peaceful protest and that undeniably hurt the Canadian economy and endangered public safety, yet Trudeau didn’t say a word. The terrorists in question were Leftists, so they got a pass.

Immigration Won’t Solve The U.S. (Or Canadian) Population Slowdown

Policy-makers should pay attention to per capita GDP before they rush to encourage more immigration.

The recent release of the Census Bureau’s population estimates, which show the U.S. population has grown by “only” 393,000 between 2020 and 2021, has prompted a number of commentators to argue that we need more immigration to increase population growth. Otherwise, we are told, the country will be “older, less productive, and less dynamic.”

The view that “population growth is inextricably linked to economic growth,” while widespread, is mistaken for several reasons. Although immigration can certainly increase a country’s population, it is well established that it has only a small impact on the share of the population that is working-age. And while slower population growth—and the societal aging that generally accompanies it—will certainly require some adjustments, our economic future is not bleak on that account. Equally important, having a more stable population offers some significant benefits that population-boosters overlook.

Ukraine crisis: Five reasons why Putin might not invade

The optics look dreadful.

Russia has deployed more than two-thirds of its military combat capability to within striking distance of Ukraine’s borders.

Its 30,000 troops that were supposed to withdraw from neighbouring Belarus at the weekend are still there. So are pontoon bridges and other logistic equipment needed for an invasion.

Violence is flaring in the two Russian-backed breakaway republics in Eastern Ukraine. Russia’s demands from Nato remain unmet and diplomacy has so far failed to bring about any significant withdrawal of Russian forces.

BLM privilege and Jan. 6 Capitol riot shame

When prominent young far-left activist Quintez Brown was arrested last week for allegedly trying to assassinate a Jewish mayoral candidate in Kentucky, he was portrayed sympathetically by the media and immediately bailed out of jail by his Black Lives Matter comrades, who crowdfunded the $100,000 cost.

Brown, 21, had BLM privilege. A celebrated gun control advocate, anointed as a rising star by the Obama Foundation, he was an honored guest on Joy Reid’s MSNBC show. He was granted a biweekly opinion column in the Louisville Courier-Journal to spew boilerplate leftist, race-based, anti-cop sentiment.

A fabulous example of doublethink was published this week. The Daily Record claimed a ‘Scot flashed her penis and used sex toy in public leaving onlookers shocked’. The pronoun ‘her’ was eventually removed from the headline, after much justified ridicule on social media.

But the details of the story are serious.

Those who most flamboyantly proclaim that they are fighting fascists continue to embrace and wield the defining weapons of despotism.

When it comes to distant and adversarial countries, we are taught to recognize tyranny through the use of telltale tactics of repression. Dissent from orthodoxies is censored. Protests against the state are outlawed. Dissenters are harshly punished with no due process. Long prison terms are doled out for political transgressions rather than crimes of violence. Journalists are treated as criminals and spies. Opposition to the policies of political leaders are recast as crimes against the state.
