Two Dems who back ‘defund the police’ movement carjacked less than 24 hours apart

Two Democrats who supported police reform in Philadelphia and Chicago were both carjacked at gunpoint within 24 hours of each other.

Illinois state Sen. Kimberly Lightford (D-Maywood) was targeted in suburban Chicago on Tuesday night, while Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon (D-Pa.) was carjacked Wednesday afternoon after an event in South Philadelphia.

Lightford was driving with her husband, Eric McKennie, in Broadview at about 9:45 p.m. when three masked suspects in a Durango SUV hijacked the couple’s black Mercedes.

Jury reaches verdict in Kimberly Potter – Duante Wright Trial – 1st degree manslaughter: GUILTY 2nd degree manslaughter: GUILTY

Dec 23 (Reuters) – The jury reached a verdict on Thursday in the manslaughter trial of Kimberly Potter, the former Minnesota police officer who mistook her handgun for her Taser and fatally shot Black motorist Daunte Wright during a traffic stop.

The jury of six men and six women have reached a consensus on whether to convict or acquit Potter and the decision will be read in court between 1:30 and 2:00 p.m. CST (1930 and 2000 GMT), according to a notice from the court.

Canadian air force commander relieved of duties in Kuwait after claims of inappropriate comments

Canada’s military relieved an air force commander of his post in Kuwait on Dec. 7 amid an investigation into claims he made inappropriate comments, CBC News has learned.

The Department of National Defence confirms that Lt.-Col. Philip Marcus was sent back to Canada on Dec. 7, “when concerns over some inappropriate comments that demonstrated a concerning misalignment with our institution’s efforts to evolve our culture were raised” to leadership.

… DND described the alleged comments as inappropriate. Sources who spoke to CBC News but who were not authorized to speak publicly said Marcus was heard making comments about lower-ranking women in the Canadian Armed Forces.

Taste the TV: Japan invents lickable screen to imitate food flavours

A Japanese professor has developed a prototype lickable TV screen that can imitate food flavours, another step towards creating a multisensory viewing experience.

The device, called Taste the TV (TTTV), uses a carousel of 10 flavour canisters that spray in combination to create the taste of a particular food. The flavour sample then rolls on hygienic film over a flat TV screen for the viewer to try.

In the Covid-19 era, this kind of technology can enhance the way people connect and interact with the outside world, said Homei Miyashita, a professor at Meiji University in Tokyo.

Liberal MP censured for defying his own party’s advice on non-essential travel

OTTAWA — A Liberal MP from Quebec has been censured by his party’s chief whip for defying advice not to travel out of the country unless the trip is essential.

Chief government whip Steven MacKinnon issued a statement Wednesday saying he is “profoundly disappointed” that Liberal MP Yves Robillard travelled outside Canada, in contravention of party instructions.

Ontario sees highest ever daily COVID-19 case count

Ontario is reporting 5,790 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, the highest daily total since the start of the pandemic.

The infections reported on Thursday eclipse the more than 4,800 cases that were reported on Apr. 16, the province’s previous daily high.

While hospitalizations and ICU numbers have risen in recent weeks, the numbers remain significantly lower than the last time Ontario was seeing record case counts. There are more than 400 people currently hospitalized in the province compared to nearly 2,000 on Apr. 16.

COVID-19 cases across Canada could be ‘very high’ by January, top doctor warns

Canada’s top doctor says urgent action is needed to curb the spread of Omicron, which is now the dominant strain of COVID-19 in several provinces.

Chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam said Wednesday there were more than 11,300 new infections nationwide the previous day, up from the average of 5,000 cases per day last week.

She said modelling shows case counts could be “very high” by early January.

Dozens of French academics have warned that freedom of expression is at risk after a German professor was suspended over a row with politics students.

Klaus Kinzler has been locked in dispute for months over accusations of Islamophobia at Sciences Po Grenoble.

In a case that has provoked allegations of left-wing cancel culture, the political studies institute has suspended him for “defamatory remarks”.

The institute is now set to lose local funding because of the row.
