Liberals plan to expand COVID-19 vaccine mandate to cover banks, telecoms sectors

OTTAWA — Canada will soon crack down on COVID-19 mandates, forcing banks, telecommunications companies and all other federally regulated workspaces to ensure their employees are inoculated, Ottawa said on Tuesday.

Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan made the announcement two months after the government said it would oblige the public sector and employees working in the federally regulated air, rail and marine transportation sectors to get their shots.

I suspect this will be as full of holes as the original civil service mandate.

Kyle Rittenhouse lashed out against NBA star LeBron James for poking fun at his tearful testimony during the Kenosha shooting trial on Twitter last month.

Rittenhouse, 18, who was dramatically acquitted in the shooting of Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber during a Black Lives Matter protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, last year, appeared on the You Are Here conservative podcast on Monday, when the hosts began bashing James.

During the trial, the Lakers player mocked Rittenhouse for breaking down while giving testimony. In a Twitter post, he wrote: ‘What tears? I didn’t see one. Man knock it off! That boy ate some lemon heads before walking into court.’

Catholic church sexual abuse must be seen in ‘historical’ context, Pope says

Pope Francis has called for caution in the “interpretation” of a damning report released in October that found as many as 330,000 children may have been sexually abused by clergy and lay members of the Catholic Church in France.

The pontiff said on Monday that the “historical situation” must be framed in context when conducting studies that explore incidents dating back decades. The inquiry behind the report, the Independent Commission on Sexual Abuse in the Church (CIASE), examined allegations of sexual abuse of minors in the Catholic church in France from the 1950s to 2020.

Vice-Admiral Edmundson charged with sexual assault, indecent acts

Vice Admiral Haydn Edmundson has been charged with sexual assault and indecent acts, the Department of National Defence announced Tuesday.

… Stéphanie Viau told CBC that Edmundson, who was a lieutenant commander at the time, exposed his genitals to her while on a navy ship during an exercise. Viau, at the time, was a 19-year-old member of the Canadian Navy.

She alleges that several days later Edmundson raped her onboard HMCS Provider while the ship was docked in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Edmundson has denied the allegations.

Scientists find ‘stealth’ version of Omicron that may be harder to track … and lucky us it’s in Canada!

Scientists say they have identified a “stealth” version of Omicron which cannot be distinguished from other variants using the PCR tests that public health officials deploy to gain a quick picture of its spread around the world.

The stealth variant has many mutations in common with standard Omicron, but it lacks a particular genetic change that allows lab-based PCR tests to be used as a rough and ready means of flagging up probable cases.

… The stealth variant was first spotted among Covid virus genomes submitted in recent days from South Africa, Australia and Canada, but it may already have spread more widely. Among the few dozen cases identified so far, none are in the UK.

Super-rich increase their share of world’s income

The share of wealth owned by the world’s richest people soared during the Covid pandemic, a major study on inequality has found.

The World Inequality Report said that 2020 saw the steepest increase in billionaires’ wealth on record.

Meanwhile, 100 million people sank into extreme poverty, the report from the Paris-based World Inequality Lab said.

The richest 10% of the population now takes 52% of global income and the poorest half just 8%, it said.

Three former University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) students did something few accused of sexual assault on college campuses are able to do: Score large settlements from the college or university that defamed them.

The three students, who will not be named by The Daily Wire, were paid $450,000 – that’s $150,000 each – by UMBC, though the school denies they did anything wrong. The students had sued the college alleging they had been defamed when the student-run newspaper, The Retriever, published their names as well as the allegations against them. The trio maintain they were falsely accused.

Professor investigated for criticizing ‘pathetic’ students

A British university professor is under investigation after he called a student walkout, which was staged over a guest speaker’s allegedly racist and transphobic address, “pathetic.”

Professor Tim Luckhurst, who heads Durham University’s South College, made the remark when the students walked out during the controversial speech by right-wing journalist Rod Liddle on Friday. He also reportedly shouted “at South College, we value freedom of speech!”
