Durham University defends student sex work training
Durham University has defended its decision to offer training sessions to help students involved in sex work.
Further Education Minister Michelle Donelan had accused it of “legitimising a dangerous industry which thrives on the exploitation of women”.
But the university said it was acting responsibly by offering students advice on how to stay safe.
Last week its students’ union offered staff and students guidance for people involved in the sex industry.

OTTAWA — Canada’s spy service said on Friday it was increasingly concerned about the rise of violent ideologically motivated online rhetoric, which it blamed in part on tensions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) said since the start of the pandemic, threats posed by extremists had “evolved with unprecedented multiplicity and fluidity.”
COVID-19, it said, had worsened existing strains of xenophobia and anti-authoritarianism. Violent extremists were exploiting the pandemic by amplifying false information about government measures and the virus, it said.

Ontario reports 661 new COVID-19 infections, 6 more deaths
Ontario is reporting more than 600 new COVID-19 cases and six more deaths on Saturday.
Provincial health officials logged 661 new infections today, up from 598 yesterday and from 508 a week ago.
Today marks the highest case count since Oct. 2 when 704 new infections were recorded.
Organized crime ‘knowingly and actively’ exploited federal pandemic benefits: intelligence reports
The federal government spent billions of dollars on income supports to help Canadians weather the pandemic — but it appears these emergency benefits inadvertently went to criminals as well.
According to a recently obtained financial intelligence report, criminals and organized crime appeared to have “knowingly and actively” defrauded the Canada emergency response benefit (CERB) and Canada emergency business account (CEBA) programs.
