Poland fears ‘major incident’ as migrants from Belarus head for border

KYIV, Nov 8 (Reuters) – Polish authorities accused Belarus of trying to spark a major confrontation on Monday and said they had mobilised additional soldiers as footage on social media showed hundreds of migrants walking towards the Polish border.

In one video, shared by the Belarusian blogging service NEXTA, migrants carrying rucksacks and wearing winter clothing were seen walking on the side of a highway.

Other videos showed large groups of migrants sitting by the road and being escorted by armed men dressed in khaki.

KENOSHA, Wis., Nov 8 (Reuters) – When George Zimmerman faced life in prison for killing Trayvon Martin, his lawyers chose not to have him testify, a decision some legal experts say contributed to his acquittal in 2013 in the last highly divisive civilian self-defense trial.

Kyle Rittenhouse, the teenager on trial for killing two protesters and wounding a third in Wisconsin last year, appears set to try a different tack. His lawyer, Mark Richards, said in court last week that he would take the stand in his own defense.

KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) — A witness at Kyle Rittenhouse’s murder trial testified Monday that he confronted a rifle-toting Rittenhouse with a gun of his own to try to stop the bloodshed, and thought he was going to die as he closed in on the young man.

Gaige Grosskreutz, 27, ended up getting shot and seriously wounded in the arm by Rittenhouse.

Grosskreutz went into action that night after seeing Rittenhouse kill a man just feet away — the second person Rittenhouse fatally shot that night.

The administration is exploring the possibility of terminating the Line 5 pipeline – which links Superior, Wisconsin, with Sarnia, Ontario – and gathering data to determine if shutting down the line will cause a surge in fuel pricing, according to published reports.

In a letter dated Thursday, 13 Congress members – led by Ohio Rep. Bob Latta – urged the president to keep the oil line in operation, saying: ‘Line 5 is essential to the lifeblood of the Midwest.’

Policeman survives suspected terror attack in French city of Cannes

Police in the French city of Cannes have shot a man who attacked a group of police officers with a knife.

Security sources have told French media the attack looks to have been motivated by Islamist terrorism.

A police source said the attacker claimed to have been acting “in the name of the Prophet.”

He reportedly opened the door of a police car stationed in front of the central police station in Cannes, before stabbing the officer in the driver’s seat.

The US reopened its borders Monday after 20 months of travel restrictions — immediately creating wild miles-long lines of cars waiting to cross over from Canada and Mexico.

The strict restrictions, first imposed by the Trump administration in March 2020, had barred access to non-US citizens traveling from 33 countries as well as overland entry from Mexico and Canada.

But starting Monday, fully vaccinated travelers are now allowed again, with tourists rushing to make long-delayed trips and overseas family members finally able to reconnect with loved ones.

Conservatism is not a set of legislative goals like lowering taxes, school choice, or even border security. It’s a set of principles or goods – what Russell Kirk called “the permanent things,” like family, opportunity, order, faith, and freedom.

A hinge moment happened this week in South Africa. The country finally transitioned from rainbow utopianism to reality.

The turning point was the municipal elections in which the 110-year-old ruling African National Congress failed to gain a majority of the vote. The party is, despite its manifest failings, still custodian of the liberator’s mantle among many black South Africans — a recent survey showed that although 60% of ANC voters associated their party with corruption, they would nonetheless vote for it; such is the brand loyalty — but the party’s once hegemonic power is in retreat. The decline over the years is neatly in tandem with the nation’s trajectory towards a failed state. At its peak in 2004, the ANC pulled nearly 70% of the national vote. This week, it could barely pull past 46%.

Maxwell, 59, who is Jeffrey Epstein’s ex-girlfriend, has allegedly proposed calling in psychologist Elizabeth Loftus, 77, as a witness at her upcoming trial.

Loftus – a psychology professor and writer who charges $500 an hour for her work, according to the Los Angeles Times – has testified at more than 300 trials, including Weinstein, serial killer Ted Bundy and acquitted murderer OJ Simpson.

Yea that worked real well for Harvey.

The press seized on his remarks and lampooned the prosecution, which eventually lost the case. Penguin sold two million copies of Lady Chatterley’s Lover in the six weeks before Christmas 1960.

If the end of the world came, but nobody told you about it, would you care? Here’s a stunning piece of information that appeared in exactly no American news media, right, left or center. I read about it in Global Times, the Chinese government’s English-language newspaper.

The Pew Research Institute, a respected non-partisan opinion research organization, polled the world’s major countries about American democracy. Only 17% said the U.S. “is a good example for other countries to follow,” while 57% said it used to be. Twenty-three percent said it never was.
