The Backdoor: How Fiction Techniques Hijacked the News

In college, I was given an assignment that permanently changed how I read and write.

The premise was almost absurd in its simplicity. There was a man and a woman in a kitchen. The woman was his wife. The man brought her her slippers. That was it. No plot. No backstory. Just that action. We were instructed to write the scene twice, using the same facts and the same sequence of events, but to convey two entirely different emotional realities using nothing but word choice, pacing, and detail.

President Trump didn’t let New Year’s festivities stop him from taking aim at Minnesota’s daycare fraud scandal, telling Mar-a-Lago partygoers the problem extends far beyond one state.

“Can you imagine they stole $18 billion,” the president said during remarks made at his annual New Year’s Eve celebration. “That’s just what we’re learning about. That’s peanuts. And California is worse, Illinois is worse and sadly New York is worse.”

“We’re going to get to the bottom of all those. It was a giant scam.”

Some snowbirds want out of Florida. A bad housing market makes it hard to leave

As the era of bilateral bad blood between Canada and the U.S. drags on, some snowbirds are facing a choice this January: Go south to warmer climes, or boycott a country that has gone from friend to somewhat of a foe.

That decision is more difficult for the hundreds of thousands of Canadians who collectively own an estimated $60 billion worth of property in Florida, the favoured refuge for generations of the winter-weary.

Donna Lockhart, a snowbird from Ennismore, Ont., decided the recent anti-Canadian sentiment was too much to bear and it was time to put her condo near Punta Gorda, Fla., up for sale and get out of U.S. President Donald Trump’s America.

German 18-year-olds asked: Are you ready for war?

Germany sounding out next generation of soldiers with mandatory survey on fitness and attitude amid fears of war with Russia

German teenagers will be greeted with a survey from the army about their readiness for war as they turn 18, when the country’s new military service scheme comes into force.

As of Thursday, all German males turning 18 will be legally required to fill in surveys sent out by the armed forces, or Bundeswehr, about their fitness for service. Those who refuse face a fine of up to €1,000 (£800).

The survey is part of Germany’s new military service scheme, which has been significantly watered down from an original proposal to bring back conscription.

The TDSB has not publicly disclosed the 2024 fraud, which the Star discovered in reviewing court records.

Toronto police need to take ‘strong action’ on anti-Israel mobs, says Ontario solicitor general

Ontario’s solicitor general wants the Toronto Police Service to urgently step up its enforcement of “hate, intimidation and harassment-motivated offences” plaguing the city.

And while Michael Kerzner’s letter to Toronto Police Service Chief Myron Dimkew and Councillor Shelly Carroll, chair of the civilian oversight board, doesn’t explicitly single out the city’s Jewish population as the victims of such offences, his intent is clear.

The TPS will get tough and institute a One Donut Only per protester policy.

Russian horseback troops face drones as old and new tactics clash

A battlefield encounter between a Ukrainian drone and a Russian soldier on horseback ended in victory for modern weaponry over centuries-old tactics.

Russia’s invasion has seen technological advances that have changed the nature of warfare, from the ubiquitous use of drones to hypersonic missiles.

Yet Russia’s shortage of military vehicles means that some of President Putin’s troops are trying to use horses to avoid getting stuck in the mud as they launch assaults on Ukrainian lines.
