Jobs, economy top voters’ priorities at the end of a turbulent 2025: Nanos poll

A year-end poll from Nanos suggests Canadians will want to see action from the Liberal government on major economic files in the new year.

Just over one in five respondents to the poll published this week said jobs and the economy were the most important national issues — more than double the 10 per cent who listed relations with the United States and President Donald Trump as their top priority.

Inflation, health care and immigration rounded out the top five concerns for Canadians.

About 40 killed and 100 injured in fire at bar in Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana

About 40 people are believed to have been killed and 100 injured after a fire tore through a crowded bar during a New Year’s Eve party in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana, according to the Italian foreign ministry.

Swiss police confirmed “several dozen” partygoers were dead. The victims could not be immediately identified because of the severity of their burns, the ministry said. It confirmed arson was not responsible, with the blaze thought to be the result of an accident.

“There has been an explosion of unknown origin,” Gaëtan Lathion, a police spokesperson in the canton of Valais in south-west Switzerland, told Agence France-Presse. “There are several injured and several dead.”

Happy New Years Everyone!!

Happy New Years Everyone!!

Happy New Year!

I’m posting this a bit early as I am not sure I can make it to midnight! Still under the weather and napping as I can.

It’s an unpleasant affliction that makes sleep fitful. Even Xavier has calmed down and allowed me to rest when I can, and progress is being made.

Thank you all for your readership. 20 years is an amazing feat for a little blog.

I am hoping to be back at what passes for my best next week.

Please keep XC’s Mom and Pa Cat in your prayers.

I hope the New Year grants all your wishes.

Trump Speaks Out About the Protests in Iran

In stark contrast to the unprincipled reactions of both Barack Obama and Old Joe Biden when the Iranian people took to the streets in previous years to protest against the bloodthirsty mullahs of the Islamic Republic, President Donald Trump didn’t hesitate to remark on the unrest in Iran on Monday, and to declare his support for the courageous Iranians who are putting their lives on the line for freedom after enduring 46 years of tyranny.

Harley Finkelstein: Canadian Jews are being targeted simply because they are Jewish

My name is Harley Finkelstein. I am a proud Jewish-Canadian, an entrepreneur and the grandson of Holocaust survivors.

I am also the son of immigrants who came to Canada more than half a century ago after fleeing Hungary following the 1956 revolution. They came here to escape persecution. They came because Canada promised safety, opportunity and the freedom to live openly.

FLANAGAN: Learning the truth about ‘children’s graves’ and residential schools is more important than ever

When the book Grave Error was published by True North in late 2023, it became an instant bestseller. People wanted to read the book because it contained well-documented information not readily available elsewhere concerning the history of Canada’s Indian Residential Schools (IRS) and the facts surrounding recent claims about “unmarked graves.”

Here Are The 10 Biggest Media Hoaxes Of 2025

It turns out that when you spend every day parroting the most asinine conspiracies and narratives imaginable, people lose faith in your ability to play it straight pretty quickly. That’s the situation that America’s propaganda media found themselves in this year, as their credibility amongst the public hit the lowest level in recorded history.

For anyone who’s paid attention to their coverage of the 2025 “news” cycle, it’s not hard to see why. From running cover for leftist violence to gaslighting Americans about their role in the cover-up over Joe Biden’s ailing health, the corporate media’s bid to hide the truth was nothing short of remarkable.

‘They thought we were problem children’: how grooming victims were failed in Oldham

In 2003, long before the term “grooming gang” entered the lexicon, social workers in Oldham noticed a disturbing pattern: girls from local children’s homes were repeatedly going missing. Often, they were found in the same locations, being harboured by the same men. Each time the authorities thought they had got a grip on the problem, it reared its head again. By 2006, there were concerns that groups of offenders were targeting children at high schools. One girl, later referred to in court as Child X, fell into their clutches while truanting when she was 12 years old. By 14, she had been abused by 300 men and was addicted to crack cocaine and heroin.

“Unless you scratch below the surface you do not realise the enormity of the problem,” Ruth Baldwin, then the executive director for young people and families at Oldham council, said in December 2006. “We are not talking about teenage relationships. These are men in their 20s, 30s, and beyond.”

Alberta, Quebec referendums likely would fail due to Canadians’ anxiety: pollster

A pollster says separatist movements in Alberta and Quebec are unlikely to succeed as long as Canadians feel a persistent sense of insecurity and anxiety about the future.

David Coletto, whose polling firm Abacus Data has been studying what it calls the “precarity mindset” in Canada for the last year, says that uncertainty would need to ease in order for a “yes” vote to succeed in either province.

Is Piers Morgan right to declare woke dead?

Donald Trump’s issuing of over 200 executive orders back in January 2025, which banished DEI policies and recognised officially that there are only two genders, prompted an avalanche of assertions that woke is finally over. This auspicious start to Trump’s second term set the mood for much of the conversation on both sides of the Atlantic, with British writer Andrew Doyle publishing his book, The End of Woke, in May.

Laughable Criticism of Nick Shirley

It is absolutely true that Nick Shirley’s one-day video blitz investigation of Somali daycares in Minnesota produced insufficient evidence to put anybody in jail.

It’s even possible that he made a mistake or two, although given what we already know, the preponderance of the evidence says that most of these daycares are shell companies that exist only to fleece the government. It’s not like Shirley’s video is the only evidence—the US Attorney is actively prosecuting cases, and now citizen journalists around the country are revealing fake Somali daycares.

‘Serious governance’ will be the theme of Canadian politics in 2026

Heading into 2026, Canada is grappling with talk of separatism referendums in two provinces, Alberta and Quebec. It is slated to participate in a formal review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) at a time when the U.S. has pledged to “reassert and enforce the Monroe Doctrine to restore American preeminence in the Western Hemisphere.” Public trust in our institutions have plummeted, down nearly 10 percentage points between 2013 and 2024 for our justice system, 13 percentage points for trust in police, and more than 15 percentage points for schools.
