NACI names several more groups who should qualify for COVID-19 booster shots

The committee now recommends mRNA boosters to people who received two doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, adults over the age of 70, front-line health-care workers with a short interval between their first two doses, and people from First Nations, Inuit and Metis communities.

The latest recommendation says the emerging evidence suggests vaccine effectiveness against asymptomatic infection and mild COVID-19 disease may decrease over time, and a booster could help restore protection.

By the new year, mandatory boosters all round.

Legault Turns His Back on Fossil Fuel Development in Quebec

Still expects big handouts from ROC.

Quebec Premier François Legault recently declared that the province is completely done with fossil fuel extraction and is now being pressured not to compensate the impacted companies.

During his speech to open the new legislative session on Oct. 19, Legault said that going forward, Quebec needs to “count on its assets to profoundly transform our economy” by relying on electricity and renewable energy and ending fossil fuel extraction.

Every few days, bodies are dumped on the outskirts of the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad.

Some have been shot or hanged, some beheaded. Many have handwritten notes stuffed into their pockets, accusing them of being members of Afghanistan’s branch of the Islamic State.

No-one claims responsibility for the gruesome, extra-judicial killings, but the Taliban are widely assumed to be responsible. IS carried out a suicide bombing in August outside Kabul airport that killed more than 150 people, and is a fierce rival of the Taliban. The two groups are now engaged in a murky and bloody battle. Jalalabad is the frontline.

On Oct. 22, Israel designated six Palestinian non-governmental organizations (NGOs) as terrorist groups working on behalf of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) — itself recognized as a terrorist organization in the United States. In response, a number of American organizations, media outlets and intergovernmental bodies immediately rose to defend the NGOs.

The alacrity with which they criticized the move indicates how discourse is often conducted about Israeli-Palestinian issues: condemn first, check details and ask questions later — if at all.

A professor at New Jersey’s Rutgers University said she believes that white people are historically “committed to being villains” — and that her unfiltered solution to addressing white supremacy would be to “take them out.”

Brittney Cooper, a professor of women’s and gender studies and Africana studies, addressed the history of colonialism during a discussion last month about critical race theory with the Root Institute.

“I think that white people are committed to being villains in the aggregate,” Cooper said during the online conference.

Pope urges ‘radical’ climate response

Speaking from the Vatican for BBC Radio 4’s Thought for the Day, the Pope talked of crises including the Covid-19 pandemic, climate change and economic difficulties, and urged the world to respond to them with vision and radical decisions, so as not to “waste opportunities” that the current challenges present.

“We can confront these crises by retreating into isolationism, protectionism and exploitation,” the pontiff said, “or we can see in them a real chance for change.”

MONTREAL — In a 5-4 split decision Friday morning, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled Quebec comedian Mike Ward had the right to make fun of Jeremy Gabriel.

The case pitted the comedian against the Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse, which had succeeded in obtaining $35,000 in damages for Gabriel from the Quebec Court of Appeal.

Lawyers for Hannah Gutierrez-Reed told NBC late Thursday that the 24-year-old former model “is devastated and completely beside herself over the events that have transpired” on the set of Baldwin’s “Rust.”

“Safety is Hannah’s number one priority on set. Ultimately this set would never have been compromised if live ammo were not introduced,” her attorneys, Jason Bowles and Robert Gorence, said in a statement.

From 1945 to the present day, the United States has been the world’s dominant power, militarily, economically, and culturally.  But a lot of people realize that this is changing, and soon, China will probably be the dominant power.

Perhaps you saw the news a few days ago about how Boston Celtics games have been removed from Chinese media after Celtics forward Enes Kantor made a video about the oppression of Tibet?  As China is the NBA’s biggest emerging market, it would be naïve to think that Kantor isn’t in for an unpleasant word from the Celtics’ owner and/or manager.

You don’t hear a heck of a lot about Oberlin College, the liberal arts college in Ohio, but on Wednesday Hugh Fitzgerald wrote here about an esteemed member of its faculty, Mohammad Jafar Mahallati who, despite revelations about his past involvement with the diabolical regime in Tehran, has enjoyed the unanimous support of Oberlin’s top administrators. Mahallati, reported Fitzgerald, served as Iran’s ambassador to the UN in the late 1980s, where, among other things, he promoted “genocidal antisemitism,” denounced the Baha’i people (hundreds of whom “have been executed or murdered” in Iran), and helped cover up the mass execution of political prisoners. At Oberlin, he teaches Religion, Islamic Studies, and Middle East and North African Studies.
