OTTAWA—The far-right People’s Party of Canada could have more national support than the federal Green party, according to an analysis of polling data for the ongoing election campaign.
The analysis, which is dubbed The Signal and conducted for the Star by Vox Pop Labs, shows the People’s Party with 4.5 per cent support nationally, compared with 3.4 per cent for the Greens.
Based on that, the Signal forecasts for the first time that the People’s Party could win one seat in the House of Commons: the Quebec riding of Beauce, where People’s Party Leader Maxime Bernier is running in a “toss up” race with the local Conservative incumbent.

Ontario reported 944 new COVID-19 cases and nine deaths on Saturday, the province’s highest daily case count in more than three months, and the highest count of new cases in unvaccinated people since the province began keeping track.
Ontario last saw case numbers this high on May 30, when 1,033 cases were reported.

TORONTO — When Ontario’s COVID-19 vaccine passport rolls out on Sept. 22, individuals with medical exceptions must show proof confirming why they can’t get the shot.
Ontario’s Ministry of Health told CTV News Toronto last week that there are only two valid medical exemptions from COVID-19 vaccinations.
The first would be an allergic reaction to a component of the vaccine within an individual, which must be confirmed by an allergist or immunologist.
The second would be if an individual suffered myocarditis or pericarditis after the first dose of a vaccine.

In a CBC News report published Tuesday, several anonymous sources allege that candidate Raj Saini, currently seeking re-election in Kitchener Centre, previously engaged in unwanted sexual advances and made inappropriate comments toward female staffers.
Saini has denied the allegations, but opposition parties on the hustings have seized on the fact that some incidents were reportedly shared with the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in 2015. The Liberal party says it has “no records or knowledge” of that matter.

The main party leaders appeared on stage for the first time Thursday in a French-language debate that was at times raucous as the four men fiercely competed for votes in a province that could very well decide who is Canada’s next prime minister.
The two-hour debate, hosted by TVA, a major broadcaster in Quebec, was a chance for Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau to regain some of the momentum he had earlier this summer when polls showed he had a massive lead in the country’s second largest province.
CBC’s Poll Tracker still has Trudeau and the Liberals ahead of others in Quebec but the margin has narrowed.

A known extremist was responsible for a terror attack in Auckland which has seen six people injured, three of whom are in critical condition, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Friday evening.
The man was shot and killed by members of a police Special Tactics Group within 60 seconds of the attack beginning, Ardern said. He was a Sri Lankan national who came to New Zealand in October 2011 and has been considered a “person of national security interest” from 2016.
Ardern said she was limited in what more she could share about the man as a result of suppression orders made by the court, although a spokesman for the Prime Minister later confirmed the Crown was “seeking the court’s urgent lifting of the suppression orders, which will be filed this [Friday] evening”.

Australia’s The Age newspaper has sparked fresh division in Victoria after publishing an extensive editorial article harshly criticizing the state government’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic and recent lockdown extensions.
On Wednesday, the paper published an editorial headlined “Victoria can’t go on like this.” The piece condemned Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews and the Labor State Government over its extension of harsh lockdown measures and a lack of evidence to back them up.
