Before Surfside building collapse, $9 million in repairs needed

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Nearly three years before an oceanfront building collapsed near Miami, an engineering firm estimated that major repairs the building needed would cost more than $9 million, according to newly released emails.

The email from the firm of Morabito Consultants was among a series of documents released by the city of Surfside as rescue efforts continued at the site of the collapsed building, where more than 150 people remained unaccounted for. At least five people were killed in the collapse.

‘They need to be charged’: Federal minister on residential school perpetrators

OTTAWA — Canada’s minister of northern affairs says the religious leaders who operated the residential school system in Canada should be held accountable for any crimes committed.

“Of course they need to be charged. This is the sort of thing you read about in another country, you don’t read about this in Canada, but if people are still alive, then we need to do all things necessary to achieve justice, of course we need to bring charges forward,” said Dan Vandal in an interview on CTV’s Question Period airing Sunday.

Ontario reports 287 new Covid cases … and I gots Modernated!

Ontario reports 287 new Covid cases … and I gots Modernated!

Ontario reports 287 new COVID-19 cases; majority are now Delta variant

Ontario reported 287 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, along with 12 new deaths, as the province’s burden of known active cases hit its lowest point since last September.

Ontario reported 346 new cases on Saturday and 256 on Friday.

The seven-day rolling average of new cases now stands at 286, down slightly from 291 yesterday.

U.K. records highest daily COVID-19 cases in months amid Delta  Indian variant surge

The U.K. on Saturday recorded its most new coronavirus infections since early February as the National Health Service ran a “grab a jab” initiative to further drive up vaccination rates.

Government figures showed that another 18,270 people tested positive for the virus across the U.K, the highest daily number since February 5. Over the past week, nearly 100,000 have tested positive, around 50% increase up on the week before. That has raised questions over whether lockdown restrictions will end as planned.

So… I got my 2nd shot yesterday at the local mass jab joint.

Had I known better I would have ignored my scheduled appointment and showed up much earlier as they were letting anyone in who showed up.

They only had Moderna on offer. So far so good,  I ‘ve experienced none of the expected reactions I had with the Pfizer jab. Not feverish or achy etc.

And my heart hasn’t exploded.

Not yet at any rate. I’m told that’s a good sign.

I am so looking forward to that haircut.

TikTok, tick-tock

Chinese-owned TikTok recently updated its privacy policy in the United States.  The immensely popular social video-sharing app, known in China as Douyin, blithely gave itself permission to collect biometric data of U.S. users, including faceprints and voiceprints.  The networking service is owned by Bytedance, a Chinese company headquartered in Beijing and founded in 2012.

CAIR and America’s Muslim #MeToo moment

The self-appointed guardian of Islamic civil rights faces allegations of abuse and omerta

The Council of American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) presents itself as a protector of civil rights; the guardian of America’s Muslim community. Its vision, it claims, is “to be a leading advocate for justice and… to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.”

But behind this seemingly noble mission lies another more political, and at times sinister, agenda.

Critics Warned the Largest Tax Increase in San Francisco History Would Be Ill-Spent. It’s Now Funding $60,000 Tents for the Homeless.

When San Francisco voters were considering a 2018 ballot measure that would impose the largest tax increase in city history to fund homelessness services, critics warned that the initiative’s spending plan was vague and unaccountable. Now, a chunk of that money is going to fund some very expensive tents.

Obama and the Broken Nation He Made Come Of Age

A generation doesn’t remember life before the crises he created.

Barack Obama turns 60 over the summer. The AARP cover with Barry posing next to a basketball and a shelf of bestselling non-fiction books he hasn’t read can’t be too far away.

Once the symbol of youthful hipness, the former boss of Hope and Change now lectures “young people” on what they should be doing. His legacy is being carried forward by 78-year-old Biden and the 81-year-old Pelosi. That’s above the average age of 80 of the House Dem leadership.

Extremists target young women in Kabul

As Nato troops prepare to leave, fears are growing for minorities and women in the city

Dead friends visit the schoolgirl at night. They return to her dreams as she last saw them: their bodies blasted down the street by the school gates, some with their satchels and clothes aflame.

“They come every night,” Rokiya Ahmedi told me. “I see my classmates dead. I see them on fire. I hear the screaming. I wake up screaming too. I scream for what I see, and I scream because of the fear that men will come to kill me also.”

There is no hope for Afghanistan.

‘Of course it’s suspicious’: 2 more Catholic churches burn in B.C.’s Southern Interior

Two more Catholic churches have burned in B.C.’s Southern Interior.

Chief of the Lower Similkameen Indian Band, Keith Crow, confirmed to Global News on Saturday morning that a church in the community of Hedley burned, as did one in the border community of Chopaka.

Hedley is about an hour’s drive southwest of Penticton, while Chopaka is about a half-hour west of Osoyoos.

That’s 4 churches now, at least one other has been vandalized. I wonder if Justin will speak out against these acts of domestic terrorism?

Harvard poll: 80% see border disaster, want Trump closure restored, reject teaching critical race theory

The Biden administration is failing big time with its inability to control illegal immigration, adding it to one of several issues that could doom Democrats if left unchecked.

In a new Harvard/Harris poll, an overwhelming 80% said that illegal immigration is a serious issue and one that needs more attention than what President Joe Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris are giving.

AND … Trump: Biden a puppet president to ‘group of people,’ doesn’t know ‘what the hell’ he signs
