Colonial Pipeline Cyberattack Exposes Vulnerabilities in Critical Infrastructure

What happened in the US could well happen in Canada, professor says

The cyberattack that shut down the Colonial Pipeline in the United States made clear the consequences of such attacks in a tangible way, as it led to gas price hikes and even fuel pump closures in the American Northeast, causing disruptions to daily life.

The incident serves as a sign of things to come if cybersecurity isn’t taken more seriously, due to increased connectivity in industrial and critical infrastructure, says Thomas Keenan, a cybersecurity expert and professor at the University of Calgary.

All three of the incidents occurred on Tuesday night in the cities of Bonn, Düsseldorf and Münster in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW).

The incidents were reportedly motivated by the current violence in Israel and Gaza.

Court dismisses CBC copyright infringement lawsuit against Conservative Party – no evidence craptastic reputation sullied

Court finds no evidence broadcaster suffered reputational damage

A lawsuit launched by the CBC against the Conservative Party of Canada in the final days of the 2019 federal election accusing the party of copyright infringement for using the broadcaster’s footage in an online ad and tweets has been dismissed by a federal court.

In his written decision released Thursday, Federal Court Justice Michael Phelan found that the use of such material fell under “fair dealing,” and that there was “no objective evidence of the likelihood of any reputational damage” to the CBC.

“There was no evidence presented that a broadcaster’s segment disclosed in a partisan setting reflected adversely on the broadcaster,” Phelan wrote.

Move the “Genocide Olympics” Out of China

“More than three million deaths worldwide have been caused by Communist China for failing to disclose, and even outright lying about, the human-to-human transmissibility of the Wuhan virus. Virtually every country has been victimized by what can only be regarded as Communist China’s mass murder. So why should nearly 200 countries reward China with the economic bonanza and implicit legitimacy that hosting the 2022 winter Olympics would confer?”

How about we just send Transgender athletes to compete?

Ted Morton: Canada may win the Line 5 battle, but we’re still losing the war

The Enbridge Line 5 pipeline confrontation is political theatre at its best and worst. But this doesn’t mean it’s inconsequential. There is virtually zero chance that the Governor of Michigan can unilaterally close down an existing pipeline that crosses both state and international boundaries. This type of issue is way outside any one state’s jurisdiction. But this doesn’t mean that Canada will have won. We may win this battle, but we are still losing the war to Blockadia — the well-organized, well-financed crusade to block oil pipelines out of Canada, and, by extension, to shut down the Canadian oilsands.

Morneau broke ethics law three times during WE Charity affair, ethics commissioner rules but Trudeau Family Grift forgiven

… In the much anticipated report, which was published alongside a similar investigation into Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s involvement in the WE scandal, Ethics Commissioner Mario Dion criticizes Morneau for failing to recuse himself from cabinet’s decision to outsource a $900 million student volunteer grant program to the organization and by allowing his staff to “disproportionately assist” WE because of his ties to co-founder Craig Kielburger.

Update – Trudeau did not break federal ethics rules in WE Charity scandal — but Morneau did: report

Ontario reports 2,759 new Covid cases … and who doesn’t want side effects from ineffective Mixy Matchy vaccines!

Ontario reports 2,759 new COVID-19 cases, lowest positivity rate in nearly six weeks

Ontario is reporting a slight increase in the number of new COVID-19 infections with more than 2,700 cases confirmed today but the province’s test positivity rate has now dropped to its lowest level in nearly six weeks.

Provincial health officials logged 2,759 new infections today, up from the 2,320 cases confirmed on Wednesday and 2,073 infections recorded on Tuesday.

Mixing COVID-19 vaccines appears safe — but no data on whether it works, U.K. study says

New preliminary data suggests that mixing Pfizer-BioNtech and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines is safe, but it’s still too soon to tell whether combining doses will provide protection against the virus.

The early results from a University of Oxford study found that mixing the two vaccines may increase the frequency of mild to moderate side effects. But the symptoms, referred to in the study as “reactogenicity,” were short-lived — lasting no longer than a few days — and there were no hospitalizations or other safety concerns.

Hamas launched suicide drones laden with explosives into Israel on Thursday. At least two exploded in the air somewhere in central Israel.
The drone attack came as over 100 long-range rockets were fired in the direction of Tel Aviv, central Israel and as far South as Eilat. Four people were injured.

The rocket attack came as the IDF prepares for a possible ground invasion of the Gaza Strip. Plans for a ground offensive are scheduled to be presented to IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Aviv Kohavi for approval later on Thursday.

The problem when a comedy site goes from satire to predictions

My friend and I have a game we often play.  He’ll read a headline to me, and it’s up to me to guess whether it’s a real headline or something from The Babylon Bee.  During the Trump era, I guessed correctly about half the time.  Since Biden took over, I’m wrong almost 100% of the time.  The problem is that I keep thinking crazed headlines are satire, but they’re not.  As the old saying goes, the lunatics have taken over the asylum.  It turns out to be difficult to satirize societal madness.
