With Ontarians under a stay-at-home order, Quebecers forced to abide by a curfew and those living in other provinces facing increased restrictions, it has become apparent that this country is not all that good at balancing public health restrictions with even the most basic freedoms. Even in the midst of a crisis, there is something particularly unseemly about police stopping people on the streets and asking to see their papers, and neighbours snitching on each other because there are one too many cars in the driveway.

TC Energy suspends work on Keystone XL as Biden plans to scrap permit today
TC Energy says it’s suspending work on the Keystone XL pipeline in anticipation of incoming U.S. president Joe Biden revoking its presidential permit Wednesday.
Biden is expected to revoke the permit for Calgary-based TC Energy’s pipeline in a flurry of executive orders after being sworn in as U.S. president on Wednesday.
Plans to revoke the permit for the $8 billion pipeline on Inauguration Day were first revealed by CBC News on Sunday and sent shockwaves through Alberta.

This is not just in Britain. Collier characterises academia as “the epicentre of global antisemitism”.
Trump releases pot prisoners jailed for life under Biden’s 1994 crime bill
President Trump on Wednesday released seven prisoners with life sentences for marijuana — including some jailed without parole under President-elect Joe Biden’s 1994 crime bill.
Paraplegic Michael Pelletier, 65, and Corvain Cooper, 41, are among the men who received prison commutations from Trump.
Pelletier had a life sentence for smuggling pot from Canada into Maine in the early 2000s. Both jurisdictions later legalized the drug.
French Teenager Accused of Insulting Islam Gets 30 Hate Messages a Minute, Her Lawyer Claims
A French teenager who was accused of insulting Islam last year is getting 30 hate-filled messages per minute a year on. That is 43,200 messages every day. Her lawyer, Richard Malka, told The Times that the girl, only known as Mila, has had to go into hiding and study from home, where she is under police protection. He said 50 social media users who have sent the teenager death threats have been identified by the police. In October, authorities sentenced a 23-year-old man after he shot a video in which he mimicked cutting the girl’s head off.

And after the lockdown restrictions have eased the numbers will creep up because lockdowns really don’t do anything more than delay the inevitable. Used wisely they can buy time. Used as a bludgeon they are worse than the disease.
I see this as a media effort to cast Pfizer as Bogeyman and take some of the pressure off Trudeau’s incompetence.

Single Pfizer Covid vaccine dose in Israel ‘less effective than we thought’, ‘Lower than Pfizer claimed’
Israel’s coronavirus tsar has warned that a single dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine may be providing less protection than originally hoped, as the country reported a record 10,000 new Covid infections on Monday.
In remarks reported by Army Radio, Nachman Ash said a single dose appeared “less effective than we had thought”, and also lower than Pfizer had suggested.
By contrast, those who had received their second dose of the Pfizer vaccine had a six- to 12-fold increase in antibodies, according to data released by Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer on Monday.

Donald Trump departs White House for last time as president
President Trump left the White House on Wednesday morning for the final time as president, describing the last four years as “the honor of a lifetime.”
Trump walked out of the White House to Marine One shortly after 8:10 am for the short ride to Joint-base Andrews where he will make farewell remarks before boarding Air Force One for the flight to his Florida resort, Mar-a-Lago.
The commander in chief, sporting his signature red tie, walked out of the executive residence holding hands with first lady Melania Trump who was wearing a black dress, large sunglasses, and heels.
Trump Announces Pardons and Commutations in Last Hours of Presidency
President Donald Trump announced late Tuesday night that he had pardoned and commuted the sentences of 143 people in the final hours of his presidency.
The president issued 73 pardons and 70 commutations.
The list included pop culture figures including rapper Lil Wayne, who was pardoned, and Kodak Black, whose sentence was commuted.

Cristina Beltran – who describes herself using the gender neutral term ‘Latinx’ – wrote last week that it was a surprise to see Latino and black faces among the MAGA mob that stormed the Capitol, and that it was also ‘unsettling’ that ‘a quarter to a third of Latino voters voted to re-elect Trump’.
She rationalized their preference for him with the idea of ‘multiracial whiteness’ which is the idea that white is more than a race or racial identity.

What Biden’s Immigration Policies Would Do To America
America’s adversaries can’t wait for this massive betrayal.
Not unlike Donald Trump, during the Presidential campaign, Joe Biden turned immigration into a major issue. However, unlike President Trump who promised to secure our nation’s borders against illegal entry and ramp up immigration law enforcement to protect innocent people from criminal aliens and international terrorists, Joe Biden has promised to do the polar opposite within the first 100 days of taking office- but no one is questioning why he would do this or how this would be beneficial to America or Americans.
The witch-hunting of lockdown sceptics
The demonisation of dissenters has reached hysterical proportions.
We have entered a new era of demonology. The hunt is on for heretics and witches who might be held responsible for our current predicament, for the plague of Covid. As in pre-modern times, sinful speakers and thinkers, those who dare to bristle against the political or scientific consensus, are being demonised and publicly shamed as assistants of the plague, as Covid’s willing helpers. They have ‘blood on their hands’, the lockdown fanatics cry, blissfully unaware of how similar they sound to those who in earlier times of disease would drag eccentrics to the stocks in the warped belief that those eccentrics either brought the plague or at least aided its spread.

As our Saturday movie columnist, Kathy wrote a lot about one very particular star, including a piece she’d filed with a title I hadn’t quite registered before: “Bette Davis Lies.”
