Canadian tax authorities confirmed they knew about illicit foreign capital inflating real estate. They first found out over two decades ago, but only confirmed it to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) this week. A whistleblowing, retired auditor first told SCMP journalist Ian Young about the report in 2016. He waited half a decade for a response from the agency, which confirmed the study took place 25 years ago. The situation shares odd circumstances with an intelligence report mentioning foreign capital and real estate, called Sidewinder. Whistleblowers allege both reports, written one year apart, were suppressed for political reasons.

Minister Guilbeault in arrears, owes the Quebec taxman

Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault yesterday admitted owes Revenu Québec a five-figure amount in back taxes.

Guilbeault in a filing with the Ethics Commissioner declared “arrears due to Revenu Québec” under a Public Declaration Of Liabilities Of $10,000 Or More. The heritage minister was the only member of the 43rd Parliament to disclose unpaid taxes.

The Department of Canadian Heritage has proposed a new legal framework to deal with “harmful” content. The framework would establish new regulatory entities with broad authority over speech and information shared on platforms like Twitter or Facebook. The rules it creates for platforms sound good on paper, but that’s about it. They disregard international experience with past laws and similar proposals around the world, as well as recommendations from legal and human rights experts inside and outside of Canada.
