Trudeau slams ‘disconnected’ Conservatives in sharply worded speech to party faithful

In a 20-minute virtual address to thousands of party members, Trudeau said Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole “can’t quite grasp” the struggles that Canadians have endured over the last year during COVID-19. He suggested the Tories would have been less generous with relief programs and unreliable pandemic stewards had they been in power.

John Ivison: Canada reluctant to side with Taiwan as Chinese aggression escalates

These are tense times to be on the frontlines of democracy. Chinese incursions into Taiwan’s air defence zone has left the island’s residents feeling under siege — besides the 15 planes that entered Taiwanese airspace earlier this week, a Chinese aircraft carrier is carrying out what are called “routine exercises” close to the island.

Taiwan’s military “won’t stand a chance,” if China chooses to invade, an unnamed source told the Chinese state news service Global Times on Friday.

Ottawa mulls exempting more workers from Canada-U.S. border shutdown: Garneau

Ottawa mulls exempting more workers from Canada-U.S. border shutdown: Garneau

Foreign Affairs Minister Marc Garneau says Ottawa is looking at expanding the categories of essential workers allowed to travel across the Canada-U.S. border.

He told a parliamentary committee Thursday that could mean allowing technicians in the integrated auto industry to be considered essential workers for cross-border purposes.

“We are specifically talking about different groups that would be potentially considered to be essential workers, that have the need to cross the border for specific reasons,” Garneau said.

The Canada-U.S. border has been closed to people travelling for vacations and other non-essential visits since March 2020 to help limit the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Canada should check its COVID-19 superiority complex: We are the laggards now, not the U.S.

If the Germans weren’t so busy with their own problems, I’d ask them to come up with a word for that feeling you get when the screw-up cousin you’ve always looked down on suddenly lands a great job, a house and a runway-model spouse while you’re left eating ravioli out of a can in a basement apartment. It’s some combination of jealousy, disorientation and sheepishness. How did the smug high ground collapse into Chef Boyardee?

What Is China Really up to on Canadian Soil? A Woman’s Brutal Murder Sheds Light on a Cult and a Disturbing Chinese Spy Network

It’s a sunny day and you’re driving down a backcountry road far from any military bases. Out of nowhere, you spy several dozen adults in camouflage marching together as if they’re a military unit on patrol. That would be out of place enough by itself. Add to it that they appear to be clad in gear resembling that of another nation’s military. You’d probably grab your phone and capture video of the incident.

Salt Spring Island is a sleepy resort island off the Vancouver coast in British Columbia, Canada. You can only get there by ferry or seaplane. In June 2020, Canadians woke up to a pair of bizarre, seemingly unconnected events two years and 100 miles apart, including a mysterious murder.

Doug Ford’s Government Violates Its Own LockDown Restrictions…Again

On April 2, Ontario Premier Doug Ford implemented strict Covid19 lockdown restrictions in Ontario, now referred to colloquially as a shutdown. This government-imposed lockdown has occurred despite increased concerns from some health officials around the world as to the effectiveness of heavy restrictions and inconclusive data that may suggest lockdowns exacerbate the problem and help Covid19 spread. This while simultaneously causing catastrophic economic damage to Ontario and Canada. Ontario is one-third of Canada’s entire economic output.

FATAH: Being allies in the fight against Islamist extremism

FATAH: Being allies in the fight against Islamist extremism

There is a saying in the Indian subcontinent about the thief, who instead of showing remorse, berates the judge. There are those within the Muslim community leadership throughout North America who fit this description, where instead of admitting wrongdoing — even if it’s unintentional — and changing course so that they can be allies in the fight against Islamist extremism, they play the victim card.

While the rest of the world was focused on anti-Asian racism and the George Floyd murder trial, it seems some Muslim activists in Canada got worried they were losing visibility as victims of big bad Canada.
