Although rumours about his health have cropped up repeatedly in recent years, this time things do not look good. Neither the Kremlin nor its counterpart in Grozny have been able to dispel the sense that Chechnya may be about to face a turning point — one that may provide an opportunity for Vladimir Putin’s opponents to get the better of Russia in Ukraine.

“When you are doing anything internationally, you have to also be aware of the image of the country, it’s not just a local matter. And so there’s an extra duty,” said Aurel Braun, who’s also an associate with the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University.
