An international law enforcement operation called Operation Box Cutter has shut down a major criminal enterprise that was supplying precursor drugs that were used in the manufacture of fentanyl.

FBI Director Kash Patel announced that 22 Chinese nationals, four Chinese pharmaceutical companies, and three Americans had been arrested in what Patel referred to as an “unprecedented” operation.

‘A clear message to Trump’: BBC correspondents react to China’s military parade

Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un stood publicly shoulder to shoulder for the first time on Wednesday, ahead of a massive military parade in central Beijing.

That parade, which marked 80 years since China’s victory over Japan in World War Two, saw Beijing unveiling a range of new military hardware – including a new nuclear intercontinental ballistic missile, a new road-bound missile for delivering hypersonic weapons, a new laser weapon, and even “robotic dog” drones.

It comes at a time when Xi seeks to project Beijing’s power on the international stage – not just as the world’s second-largest economy, but also as a counterweight to the United States as Trump’s tariffs rock the global economic and political order.

’Mercy of politics’: Canadian farmers weigh plans as Chinese tariff hits canola price

As Chinese tariffs on Canadian canola products continue to hamper the cash price of one of the country’s most valuable crops, farming experts say producers have big decisions ahead of them.

Market analyst Chuck Penner with LeftField Commodity Research said while future prices are down slightly, the cash price farmers receive for their canola, also known as the basis, is much lower.

I can make your life better, President Xi tells anti-West alliance

President Xi has outlined an economic vision for his “alternative” group of non-western powers as its members battle a wave of sanctions and tariffs from Washington and its allies.

Xi welcomed the leaders of Russia, Iran, India and other Eurasian states to a meeting of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO), which campaigns for a greater role for non-western powers on the world stage.

Several leaders complained of facing the growing threat of US and EU sanctions. Member states include western bête noires such as Iran, Russia and Belarus, but even supposed friends of the West such as India are facing crippling tariffs from President Trump, in part because of their ties to Moscow.

China’s navy is expanding at breakneck speed – and catching up with the US

“Socialism is good…” a pensioner warbles into a portable karaoke mic, slightly off-key and drowned out by her friends’ chatter.

But they join her for the chorus: “The Communist Party guides China on the path to power and wealth!”

It is not the catchiest karaoke number. But it is an apt one to belt out as they look towards a horizon framed by cranes towering over ships of all sizes.

U.S. Treasury Warns of $312 Billion in Chinese Laundering For Mexican cartels

… As reported previously by The Bureau in coverage of a sweeping FinTRAC warning on Chinese underground banking in Toronto, FinCEN is now raising similar alarms. The Treasury said so-called “money mules” often rely on falsified jobs and identities to gain access to the banking system, disguise unexplained wealth, and buy residential properties. In cases where these mules opened accounts, they frequently listed occupations such as “student,” “housewife,” “retired,” or “laborer” — roles that would not normally involve large volumes of financial activity — yet the accounts showed high-value deposits and transactions consistent with laundering.

How China’s Market Dominance Tactics Call for Caution on EV Tariff Concessions

Beijing’s escalation of tariffs on Canadian agricultural products has prompted prominent voices such as Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe to push Ottawa to drop its tariffs on Chinese EVs.

The argument is that Ottawa’s tariffs primarily benefit the central Canada-based EV sector, while Western farmers bear the cost of China’s retaliation, including its recent 75.8 percent tariffs on Canadian canola. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has noted that China understands “divisions” in Canada and that it uses targeted tariffs to divide the country to Beijing’s advantage.

National security or xenophobia? Texas restricts Chinese owning and renting property

Jason Yuan, a second-hand car shop owner, closes the hood of a vehicle after tightening the last nut on the battery terminal – a routine he is all too familiar with.

Texas has long felt like home for him, as a naturalised US citizen born in China. But a recently passed state law is shaking his belief in his chosen homeland.

Texas Senate Bill 17 of 2025, also known as SB 17, will take effect on 1 September, restricting people and companies from China, Iran, North Korea and Russia from purchasing and renting property.

It’s a legitimate National Security issue despite the Chicom friendly BBC’s effort to muddy the waters.

Chinese Spies Hit More Than 80 Countries in ‘Salt Typhoon’ Breach, FBI Reveals

A Beijing-linked yearslong espionage campaign that hit U.S. telecom companies and swept up Donald Trump’s phone calls actually targeted more than 80 countries, reaching across the globe to a far greater extent than investigators initially understood.

The scope of the intrusion allowed Chinese intelligence officers to potentially surveil U.S. citizens’ private communications and track their movements around the globe, Brett Leatherman, the FBI’s top cyber official, said in an interview. The agency estimates that the intruders likely obtained more than one million call records and targeted the telephone calls and text messages of more than 100 Americans.

“This is one of the more consequential cyber espionage breaches we have seen here in the United States,” he said.

Carney’s conundrum: Will he abandon some 40,000 farmers to save Canada’s auto industry?

You might have seen those bright yellow fields reaching toward the horizon under a clear blue sky — fields of canola spread across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, bringing in billions of dollars each year for farmers and their families.

Now the annual harvest is in danger: one of Canada’s biggest customers, China, has slapped a 76 per cent tariff on canola seed, as well as a 100 per cent tariff on canola oil and meal. Why has it done this? In retaliation for the 100 per cent tariff Canada applied to Chinese electric vehicles starting last October. We were copying the United States at the time, back when relations between our two countries were more cordial, to protect the American and Canadian auto industries. But the Canadian sector, which operates mostly in Ontario, has yet to produce a single EV.

How China Influences Elections in America’s Biggest City

The Chinese consulate in Manhattan has mobilized community groups to defeat candidates who don’t fall in line with the authoritarian state.

In New York City, social clubs backed by China undermined a congressional candidate who once challenged the regime on Chinese television.

They helped unseat a state senator for attending a banquet with the president of Taiwan.

And they condemned a City Council candidate on social media for supporting Hong Kong democracy.

Why pivoting to China is a huge mistake for Canada

China’s behaviour has not changed since the founding of the People’s Republic of China. It aims to create wedges between America and its allies in the hope of undermining U.S. economic, political, diplomatic and security interests in the Indo-Pacific region.

Prominent scholar Yan Xue Tong of Tsinghua University explained China’s long-term interests this way …
