How Americans Forgot Communism – Only those who lived in its shadow seem to be worried about contemporary parallels

When communism collapsed in Europe 30 years ago, it seemed vanquished. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics turned out to be none of those things and broke into 15 independent countries. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, McDonald’s replaced Marx, and no one argued anymore that real communism still hadn’t been tried.

FLASHBACK: Canadian politicians who have praised the Cuban communist regime

Thousands of Cubans filled the streets of Havana over the weekend in the largest anti-government protest on the communist island in decades.

Chanting “freedom” and “Diaz-Canel step down,” protesters voiced their disdain of the government in light of the worst economic crisis Cuba has faced since the fall of the Soviet Union.

The Cuban regime’s lacklustre handling of the pandemic has resulted in a shortage of basic goods and a curbing of civil liberties and freedoms.

Teach our kids about communism

Conservatives want us to learn about the red menace

One of the more egregious failures on the part of educators on both sides of the Atlantic over the past 50 years has been their omitting to teach several generations of young people about the communist regimes of the 20thcentury. Now I understand that classroom time is limited, and that these days especially it is very important to decolonise Peppa Pig or whatever, but even so.

That the systems that held entire populations captive, and which enslaved and killed millions, and were run by little men who were worshipped as gods, are deemed too trivial to study is really quite remarkable.

We must hold the perpetrators of Soviet crimes to account

We must hold the perpetrators of Soviet crimes to account

Eighty years ago, a targeted campaign of Soviet communist repression against the people of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania peaked with mass deportations carried out over several nights in June of 1941.

The dreaded sound of a heavy knock on the door in the middle of the night, signalled that a troika of Stalin’s henchmen were waiting to storm into the home or farm to herd families onto waiting trucks at gun point. From their homes, they were driven to central railway depots and onto waiting cattle cars, which would carry the victims off to distant Gulag slave labour camps — often never to return.

Morgan Zegers: ‘Young People Don’t Know The Reality of Communist Countries’

Zegers says the main reasons why socialist ideas take root in the minds of young Americans are:

  1. They do not know the reality of countries that suffered from communism or socialism.
  2. They are in a kind of comfort zone and convenience that prevents them from visualizing beyond the goodness of the capitalist system in the United States.
