Our moral panic plays into the hands of Big Tech
Just before the Russian invasion of Ukraine consumed the media, New York Times columnist Jay Caspian Kang and Substacker Matthew Yglesias published near-simultaneous critiques of the notions of “disinformation” and “misinformation”. This convergence among prominent liberals was significant. These and related concepts like “fake news” have shaped press coverage of a range of issues since the presidential contest of 2016 and have legitimised a new, censorious speech regime on tech platforms. But they usually go unquestioned on the Left.
They are the supposed nonpartisan group of top spies looking out for the best interest of the nation.
But the 51 former “intelligence” officials who cast doubt on The Post’s Hunter Biden laptop stories in a public letter really were just desperate to get Joe Biden elected president. And more than a year later, even after their Deep State sabotage has been shown again and again to be a lie, they refuse to own up to how they undermined an election.
OTTAWA—For Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly, there is one tool that’s not only paved the way for, but sustained, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine: disinformation.
And she wants to position Canada as a leader in tackling misleading content online, starting with social media.
“Propaganda is not only happening in Russia, it’s happening in new virtual battlegrounds, which are our social media companies,” Joly said Friday in conversation with Janice Stein, founding director of the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs.
“So what Canada will be doing, and what I want to make sure that we push even more … is (that) social media companies need to do more to prevent propaganda, and to counter any forms of disinformation,” the minister added.

Here’s one solid minute of the mainstream media repeating the same lie, verbatim, that the Hunter Biden laptop story was Russian disinformation.

As CBC News reported last week, the Department of Canadian Heritage — which helps to oversee the government’s response to a rising tide of false information online — confirmed it provided more than $17,000 to Common Ground magazine through a special program of the Canada Periodical Fund intended to help publications weather the pandemic.
The B.C.-based wellness magazine has been publishing unsubstantiated claims that COVID-19 vaccines could cause cancer in children and that ivermectin — a drug used to rid livestock of parasites that is sometimes prescribed to humans — can reduce COVID-19 mortality.
The Western intelligence apparatus has been busy in Ukraine. With financing and collaboration through various non-governmental organizations, it won the information war with the help of Ukrainian media before Russia ever fired a shot in February. Even the country’s newest publications, like the Kyiv Independent, have received support and funding from institutions associated with the Central Intelligence Agency.
In most cases, these outlets have propagandized to the beat of the West’s war drums rather than inform the public.

There is yet a third aspect to the phenomenon: the same powers that be want the people to forget that merely twenty years back they themselves assaulted Yugoslavia/Serbia, used missiles with depleted uranium, bombed cities and shot at civilians. Of course, that earlier event was a humanitarian action while the current one is a brutal act of aggression, but we digress.
