European Army: Rhetoric versus Reality

Euro Army – Future General

European federalists seeking to transform the 27-member European Union into a European superstate — a so-called United States of Europe — have revived a decades-old proposal to build a European army.

The call for a supranational army, part of a push for Europe to achieve “strategic autonomy” from the United States, is being spearheaded by French President Emmanuel Macron, who, as part of his reelection campaign, apparently hopes to replace outgoing German Chancellor Angela Merkel as the de facto leader of Europe.

Most Europeans believe US in new cold war with China and Russia – and they want no part of it

A majority of Europeans believe a new cold war is under way between the US and its chief geopolitical rivals, China and Russia, according to a report – but few view their own country as a direct participant.

Based on polling in 12 member states, the study by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) found, however, that more Europeans believed the EU leadership in Brussels was a party to the new international conflict.

… “The European public thinks there is a new cold war but they don’t want to have anything to do with it,” said Mark Leonard, a co-author of the study and ECFR director. “Our polling reveals that a ‘cold war’ framing risks alienating European voters.”

If Washington and Brussels were preparing for an “‘all of society’, generational struggle against autocracies in Beijing and Moscow”, they could discover they “do not have a societal consensus behind them,” wrote Leonard and his Ivan Krastev, an ECFR board member.

Disbelief and betrayal: Europe reacts to Biden’s Afghanistan ‘miscalculation’

Now, the American president’s decision to allow Afghanistan to collapse into the arms of the Taliban has European officials worried he has unwittingly accelerated what his predecessor Donald Trump started: the degradation of the Western alliance and everything it is supposed to stand for in the world.

Is Western Europe Really Turning to the Right?

A large-scale and widely-noted survey, “The Conversion of Europeans to the Values of the Right,” suggests that Western Europe is trending conservative. But a close look at the survey data finds that not to be the case.

La Fondation pour l’innovation politique (or the Fondapol Foundation), which calls itself a “liberal, progressive, and European think tank,” surveyed 7,603 respondents in Great Britain, France, Germany and Italy between January 20 and February 10, 2021. In striking contrast to historic trends, it found the young to be more conservative than the old, suggesting a move toward conservativism.

Biden Plans to Keep Coddling Europe

Biden Plans to Keep Coddling Europe

Just who is the superpower?

President Joe Biden is venturing abroad. He’s off to the United Kingdom for the G-7 meeting, Brussels for a NATO gathering and side chat with Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and finally to Switzerland to talk with Russia’s Vladimir Putin. It’s a full trip, and Biden apparently plans to spend a lot of time apologizing for his predecessor.

The New York Times headlined its article “Biden Aims to Soothe European Leaders Unsure of U.S. Reliability.” (Online ended up with a more prosaic title.) Biden, reporters Michael D. Shear and David E. Sanger declared, will be “trying to reassemble and rally the shaken Western alliance.” His “overarching task is to deliver the diplomatic serenity that eluded such gatherings during four years in which Mr. Trump scorched longstanding relationships with close allies.”

Mind the gap

One of the lessons of European history is that corridors are bloody dangerous. When we heard Vladimir Putin accusing the west of staging a military coup in Belarus to topple Lukashenko, we listened up because European land grabs are usually preceded by fake allegations and staged incidents. Hitler’s invasion of Poland was preceded by the so-called Gleiwitz incident, an attack on a German radio transmitter – allegedly perpetrated by Polish soldiers, but actually carried out by the Nazis themselves.

French call to replace English with Latin as Europe’s official language

An anti-English movement is brewing in France. Clement Beaune, French Minister for European Affairs led a campaign for “European linguistic diversity” last month, where he emphasized the lack of need for English after Brexit.

I had 3 years of Latin. Don’t really think the immigrant population is going to like it.

There Is an Outsized Islamist Terrorist Threat in Europe

Authorities in Denmark and Germany arrested 14 suspected Islamic extremists earlier this month for plotting a terrorist attack, likely in Europe. The suspects, who include three Syrian brothers, are accused of acquiring firearms and several kilograms of chemicals used for manufacturing explosives, Denmark’s security and intelligence service said on Friday. An Islamic State (ISIS) flag was also discovered in subsequent police searches.

Like many parts of the world, European governments face numerous types of terrorist actors across the ideological spectrum. However, extremist Islamist activity continues to be Europe’s top terrorist threat.

With the China deal, the EU falls back to hard realpolitik

With the China deal, the EU falls back to hard realpolitik

“…Simply put, the EU-China agreement is a far more meaningful expression of European strategic autonomy than anything seen so far in the heated debate over the concept, outclassing even Macron’s most headline-grabbing interviews. The indignant cries of American commentators that Europe should have waited to consult with the Biden administration miss the point: the lack of consultation is the message.”

The US should quit NATO in response. But it won’t, not with President China Boy in charge.

Shocked, Shocked to Find Europe Cutting Deals With China Behind Our Back

Europe and China yesterday signed a Comprehensive Agreement on Investment after seven years of negotiation. Why now? As I report at Asia Times, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron pushed the deal through to pre-empt anything that the new U.S. administration might have to say on the subject.

To Europe with Love: “Diplomats” or Terrorists from Iran’s Mullahs?

While the European Union appears excited that Joe Biden will be the next US President and then they can immediately rejoin the nuclear deal and lift sanctions against the mullahs, Tehran continues its terrorism on the European soil.

As the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, is urging the US to rejoin the JCPOA, one of Iran’s active diplomats in Belgium is currently on trial, accused of orchestrating a terrorist operation in Europe in 2018. French officials foiled a planned bomb attack in Paris against a large “Free Iran” convention attended by tens of thousands of people, including many high-level speakers such as former US House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and Canada’s former Prime Minister Stephen Harper and former Foreign Minister John Baird.
