Wild Boar Head Placed on Quran in Swedish Town Following Mass Stabbing by Afghan Immigrant

Earlier this month, the Swedish town city of Vetlanda saw a mass stabbing incident, in which a 22-year-old Afghan man injured seven people. A local association that helps migrants subsequently voiced concerns about animosity toward refugees.

A chopped-off wild boar head has been placed on a copy of the Quran in the Swedish town of Vetlanda in Jönköping County. The act is currently being investigated as a hate crime and incitement against an ethnic group, the police said.

The installation was found in a parking lot in a residential area. By the time the police patrol arrived at the scene, many onlookers had already gathered to get a glimpse.

In December 2016, New York Times reporter Rukmini Callimachi travelled to Canada to meet Shehroze Chaudhry, an Oakville, Ontario man who claimed to have been a part of ISIS in Syria in 2014 before returning to Canada. Callimachi, a foreign correspondent who covered Al Qaeda and ISIS at the time, would turn Chaudhry’s story into the award-winning—and later largely retracted—podcast series, Caliphate. But in this moment, as she left Canada, she felt like Chaudhry simply needed someone to talk to.

She put him in touch with Mubin Shaikh, a counterterrorism and extremism expert. Shaikh then called Amar Amarasingam, an extremism expert and assistant professor at Queen’s School of Religion, to give Chaudhry more support. Amarasingam first spoke to Chaudhry on Dec. 8, 2016 and told The Journal they’ve been “in touch ever since, on and off.”

Sharing the identity of a teacher who showed pupils an “offensive” cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad could result in police action, a watchdog has warned.

Protests were held outside Batley Grammar School, where the staff member was suspended after complaints.

Baroness Kishwer Falkner said making a teacher fear for their safety was “simply unacceptable”.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission chair said the school “ought to be trusted” to take action.

A group of religious conservatives has managed to shut down a school for two days running, exact a grovelling apology from its headteacher, and have a teacher suspended. The teacher’s name has been circulated online, both by protesters and a local religious charity, forcing him into police protection.

After being slapped with a temporary ban from Twitter, 17-year-old Mila — who was forced into hiding in France last year after receiving thousands of death threats for her criticism of Islam — simply wrote, “Hi, I’m back!” after her account was reinstated.

When contacted by Le Point, she said she received no explanation or apology from Twitter.

Student petition supports Teacher ‘who showed Prophet Mohammed cartoons’ – forced to flee home over death threats

A petition started by students of the teacher suspended by Batley Grammar School has been signed by thousands of people today – at a rate of one per second – as it was revealed he was forced to flee his home because of death threats.

The ‘burly Yorkshire lad’ in his 20s, who has not been named, is getting support from police after he allegedly showed cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed as the headteacher today kept 980 children at home after 50 Muslim protesters from outside the area turned up for a second day.

Minister ‘disturbed’ by school protest over Prophet Mohammed cartoon, says teachers should not be ‘intimidated’

The UK communities secretary has raised his concerns over a demonstration that took place at a school in West Yorkshire, after a teacher allegedly showed a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed during a religious studies lesson.

Speaking on Friday, Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick told Sky News that the Department for Education had been in touch with the school and the local council, and an investigation into the teacher’s conduct was the right way to proceed.

Religion class teacher ‘warned pupils he would show Muhammad cartoon in class on blasphemy’ – sparking fury from Muslim parents and earning him a suspension

A teacher suspended after allegedly showing caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad during a religious education lesson is said to have accepted that pupils would tell their parents about it before displaying the images.

Dozens of furious Muslim parents protested outside the historic Batley Grammar School in West Yorkshire today, which had to delay its opening and told pupils to stay at home amid chaotic scenes at the gates.

Row erupts in France over state funding for mosque

PARIS (AFP) – A row has erupted in France over plans to build a mosque in Strasbourg, with the interior ministry on Wednesday (March 24) accusing the municipal authorities there of using public money to fund “foreign meddling” on French soil.

While President Emmanuel Macron wants to crack down on Islamic extremism, which he blames for a series of deadly terror attacks in France since 2015, the planned mosque in the eastern French city has found itself in the government’s crosshairs because it is backed by a leading Turkish Muslim group.

On Monday, municipal officials in Strasbourg, run by a Green mayor, approved a grant of 2.5 million euros (S$3.98 million) to the Milli Gorus Islamic Confederation (CMIG), a pan-European movement for the Turkish diaspora. But the CMIG is one of three Muslim confederations in France that have refused to sign a new anti-extremism charter championed by Macron.
