Hollywood reacts to overturning of Harvey Weinstein rape conviction: ‘Beyond disappointed’

Hollywood has reacted with shock to the news that the disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein’s rape conviction has been overturned by a New York court.

The fallen movie mogul was sentenced to 23 years in 2020 for two sex crimes, a decision that a court of appeals has now called the result of an unfair trial.

Weinstein will remain imprisoned after also being convicted of rape in Los Angeles and sentenced to 16 years.

The Hockey Canada scandal shows the harmful escalation of non-disclosure agreements

The Hockey Canada scandal is back in the headlines after five players were charged over an alleged group sexual assault that took place in a London, Ont., hotel room in 2018. The arrests follow the 2022 revelation that Hockey Canada used taxpayer dollars and membership dues to pay off victims of sexual assaults and quiet them with non-disclosure agreements, or NDAs. The victim in the London case reported to police and co-operated throughout – but the police sent her back to Hockey Canada for their own internal investigation. This is a common practice where a powerful institution or corporation is involved.

Police launch probe into Brand sexual offence claims

The Metropolitan Police says it will investigate allegations of “non-recent” sexual offences following news reports about comedian Russell Brand.

The force has received a “number of allegations of sexual offences in London” as well as elsewhere in the country, and no arrests had been made.

It follows a joint investigation by the Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches in which four women accused Brand of sexual assaults and rape.

The fall of Russell Brand is no victory for women

Our attitudes towards sex have changed profoundly over the past two decades – and not always for the better.

You have to hand it to Channel 4. Two decades ago, the broadcaster helped fuel Russell Brand’s rise to fame. Now, it has removed all of the old programmes that feature him from its website. Back in the 2000s, Channel 4 gained viewers and revenue from Brand’s lewd antics. Today, it is winning plaudits for its Dispatches documentary, which features women accusing Brand of rape and sexual assault. No matter what else can be said about the quality of its output, Channel 4 clearly still excels at riding the cultural zeitgeist.

Russell Brand makes first comments since sexual assault allegations

Russell Brand says it has been an “extraordinary and distressing” week after rape and sexual assault allegations were made against him.

In a video published on social media, he thanked followers for their support and for “questioning the information that you’ve been presented with”.

They are his first public comments since allegations were published by the Sunday Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches last weekend.

Brand has denied the claims.

YouTube suspends Russell Brand from advert income

YouTube has suspended Russell Brand’s channels from making money from adverts for “violating” its “creator responsibility policy”.

The video platform said it was taking action “to protect” its users.

Meanwhile, the BBC said it had removed some programmes featuring the comedian and actor from its streaming services.

It comes after he was accused of rape and sexual assaults between 2006 and 2013. He denies the claims, saying his relationships were “always consensual”.

I am not a fan but at this point he is innocent until proven guilty and YouTube is simply using this situation to not pay him.

Russell Brand accuser: ‘He’s saying one thing and I know the demon underneath it’

In her first full interview, a woman who alleges that the comedian raped her tells The Times why she is talking about it now

When Nadia began her treatment at a medical centre for victims of rape, she struggled to verbalise what had just happened to her.

“I literally couldn’t say the word ‘rape’, ” she reflects. “I couldn’t believe that [could happen] to anyone I know, as silly as that was. But by the end of it, I was like, ‘Oh my god. He raped me.’ ”

It was summer 2012 and her assailant, Nadia claims, was Russell Brand, the actor and comedian, who at that point was at the height of his fame and living in Los Angeles.

The media personality Russell Brand has been accused of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse during a seven-year period at the height of his fame.

The allegations were the result of a joint investigation by the Sunday Times, the Times and Channel 4 Dispatches.
