Media Word of the Week: ‘Insurrection’

The most recent Gallup survey on media credibility found that the percentage of Americans who trust the Fourth Estate “a great deal” is 9 percent. Assuming that this abysmal showing doesn’t constitute some perverse source of pride in America’s newsrooms, an honest self-examination of their coverage concerning Wednesday’s mayhem on Capitol Hill would be a good way to begin rehabilitating their reputation. Their response to that utterly predictable event was both monolithic and moronic. That they are guilty of both charges can be validated by typing “insurrection” into Google and searching News. This word is used—fallaciously—in countless headlines about an event that didn’t remotely justify such a description.

D.C. Attorney General: Trump, Don Jr., Giuliani May Be Investigated Over Capitol Riot

“I think the question is, how far up does it go? Clearly the Capitol was ground central in all of this mob’s behavior,” Racine said. “Donald Trump Jr., Rudy Giuliani, even the President of the United States, were calling on their supporters and hate groups to go to the Capitol and, in Rudy Giuliani’s words, ‘exercise combat justice.’”

DC mayor discouraged additional federal law enforcement day before Capitol riots — then bashed them for not doing more

In a letter to Pentagon and Justice Department officials just one day before riotous Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol, Democratic Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser discouraged additional help from federal law enforcement — only later to slam federal agents for not doing more to quell the riots.
