Scientists grow mini human brains to power computers

It may have its roots in science fiction, but a small number of researchers are making real progress trying to create computers out of living cells.

Welcome to the weird world of biocomputing.

Among those leading the way are a group of scientists in Switzerland, who I went to meet.

One day, they hope we could see data centres full of “living” servers which replicate aspects of how artificial intelligence (AI) learns – and could use a fraction of the energy of current methods.

This is exactly what’s going to go wrong!

Get your wife beater on …

‘Offensive’ phrase still used for tank tops on Amazon, even though it violates Canada’s advertising code

Several ads for men’s tank tops remain on Amazon’s Canadian website, despite an Ad Standards Council ruling that the phrase used to describe them — “wife beater” — is offensive, trivializes domestic violence and violates Canada’s advertising code.

The slang term refers to a certain style of tight-fitting tank tops introduced in the 1930s as a men’s undershirt. The shirt entered into popular culture in 1951, when Marlon Brando wore one while playing the hard-edged, violent Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire.

Trans who attempted to assassinate Brett Kavanaugh gets off light with just over 8 years in prison

The California man who attempted to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh following the leak of an opinion overturning Roe v. Wade was sentenced to eight years and one month in federal prison Friday, to be followed by a lifetime of supervised release.

The sentence imposed upon Nicholas Roske — who now identifies as a trans woman named “Sophie” — by Biden-appointed federal judge Deborah Boardman, amounted to a defeat for federal prosecutors, who had requested that Roske be sentenced to 30 years to life. Roske’s defense team had asked for an eight-year sentence and 25 years of supervised release.
