OTTAWA—NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has accused his political rivals of putting their electoral prospects before protecting Canada’s democracy, the day after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau unveiled bombshell allegations that there are Conservatives with ties to foreign meddling.
That the prime minister dropped those revelations at a public inquiry peeling back the layers of his own Liberal government’s response to foreign interference was not lost on Singh, who said Thursday that both Trudeau and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre “have, at many times, chosen to put their party before the country.”

An Egyptian-born surgeon who harassed two of his female colleagues for dates tried to blame his behaviour on Britain’s “open culture” of socialising.
Dr Hosam Halim, 48, who worked at the Royal Free Hospital London and then at Ipswich Hospital in Suffolk, was investigated by the General Medical Council after the incidents.
At a tribunal hearing, Halim claimed he had felt isolated and lonely after seeing his colleagues drinking in wine bars.

Clear majority of Canadians now say there’s too much immigration
For the first time in a quarter-century, a long-term tracking poll has found a clear majority of Canadians believe the country has accepted too many immigrants.
According to the results of the survey released on Thursday, 58 per cent Canadians said there’s too much immigration, up from 44 per cent in 2023 and 27 per cent in 2022.
The responses continue a trend since 2022, after years of a pro-immigration consensus.

When British-Kashmiri Shagufta Rashid migrated to the UK from Pakistan in 1990, she was already a married woman with a stable home life. Her husband was also her cousin, but in her culture, especially at the time, it was considered normal.

Federal office mandate burdening Ottawa doctors as public servants seek medical notes
Family doctors in Ottawa are seeing an influx of public servants looking for medical notes to support work-from-home requests, putting added strain on an already overburdened health-care system.
Dr. Roozbeh Matin, who practises in Barrhaven, said he’s been noticing the trend for months, ever since the federal government announced plans to mandate public servants to work from the office more often.
“This is a systemic problem that all of us physicians in the Ottawa area are noticing,” he said. “We have been basically inundated with requests from our civil servant patients requesting various sorts of accommodation.”
