NDP MP, Beijing critics call on Ottawa to launch foreign agent registry quickly

NDP MP Jenny Kwan and vocal critics of China are calling on the federal government to swiftly introduce — and on Parliament to quickly pass — foreign agent registry legislation to safeguard the next federal election.

In a new petition, Kwan and a coalition of human rights and pro-democracy groups are urging the House of Commons to pass the yet-to-be introduced legislation as soon as possible.

Under intense scrutiny over its handling of alleged Beijing-backed interference operations in the last two federal elections, the Liberal government launched public consultations on a proposed foreign agent registry in March.

Ukraine Considers Suspending Israel Visa Deal Amid Espionage Suspicions

Ukraine’s ambassador to Israel, Yevhen Korniichuk, has confirmed that his country is considering suspending its current visa-free travel arrangements with Israel after reports surfaced that Israeli officials had leaked high-level intelligence to Russia. The intelligence had reportedly been garnered at the Ramstein Air Base forums where Western allies gather to discuss how to respond to the ongoing invasion.

Tensions between Kyiv and Tel Aviv have been gradually coming to a head over the past year due to Israel’s perceived inaction regarding the invasion as well as a clampdown on Ukrainian refugees in recent months.

Afghan Coffin Makers

Following months of pressure from refugee advocacy groups and opposition parties, the federal government says it is thinking about increasing the number of Afghans it can bring to Canada.

“It’s safe to say publicly that we will show some flexibility,” said Immigration Minister Marc Miller, referring to the goal the Liberal Party set during the last federal election campaign of bringing 40,000 Afghan refugees to Canada.

“There is some uncertainty in the number of people obviously that assisted Canada and clearly what their family members, who their family members are, and the level of risk that those people face in that country. And it’s not like Canada will hit a number and walk away from the table.”
