Drug shortages worsen across Canada, extend beyond kids’ pain and fever meds

HALIFAX – Drugstore shortages in Canada are now extending beyond the children’s pain and fever medication aisle into other over-the-counter and prescription drugs as supply problems worsen across the country.

Hundreds of medications are either running low or out of stock completely, with some store shelves depleted of children’s allergy medication, adult cough and cold syrup, eye drops and even some oral antibiotics, industry experts say.

Girl Guides of Canada announced Tuesday that the organization is renaming “Brownies,” as it says the name has caused “personal harm” to racialized girls and the change will reflect its goals of empowering girls.

“We heard from several members and former members that the name Brownies has caused them personal harm, so we are changing the name of this branch to further remove barriers for belonging for racialized girls and women,” Jill Zelmanovits, CEO of Girl Guides of Canada, said in a press release.

Boko Haram jihadists killed a group of women in Nigeria after accusing them of witchcraft following the death of a militant commander’s children in northeast Borno State, relatives, residents and a woman who escaped have told AFP.

Accusations of witchcraft are not uncommon in Nigeria, a religious conservative country almost equally divided between the mostly Muslim north and Christian south.

The F.B.I. had as many as eight informants inside the far-right Proud Boys in the months surrounding the storming of the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, recent court papers indicate, raising questions about how much federal investigators were able to learn from them about the violent mob attack both before and after it took place.

The existence of the informants came to light over the past few days in a flurry of veiled court filings by defense lawyers for five members of the Proud Boys who are set to go on trial next month on seditious conspiracy charges connected to the Capitol attack.

German soldiers ordered to remove ‘SS’ size labels from new uniforms

German soldiers have been instructed to tear out size labels from their new camouflage uniforms because they bear the initials “SS”, apparently an abbreviation for “small, short”.

In recent weeks the defence ministry has distributed about 313,000 sets of combat clothing, including helmets, sleeping bags and waterproof jackets and trousers, to the troops at a cost of €2.3 billion.

“White nationalism” is an “active” threat to the Canadian Armed Forces, a new report says, but the Forces’ counter-intelligence unit is under-resourced and unable to “proactively” deal with the issue.

A ministry statement said author Margaret Atwood, actor Jim Carrey and Amy Knight, a noted historian of the KGB, were on the banned list.

Canada asked to hit itself & Cuba with sanctions for repressing thousands after major protests

A Cuban-Canadian rights group is formally requesting that Ottawa slap sanctions on officials in Cuba for Havana’s repression of demonstrators at a July, 2021, protest.

Democratic Spaces, founded and directed by Michael Lima, a Cuban-Canadian, is filing a request with the Department of Global Affairs’ sanctions policy and operations co-ordination division on Monday morning. Mr. Lima is a human-rights activist and researcher.

“Levels of repression in Cuba today are the highest in two decades,” Mr. Lima said.
