Israel intercepts Gaza flotilla near Crete and detains 175 activists

Pro-Palestinian activists say at least 22 boats from a flotilla carrying aid for Gaza have been intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters near the Greek island of Crete.

The organisers of the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) denounced the action as “piracy”, saying those on board had been seized unlawfully more than 965km (600 miles) from Gaza, which is under an Israeli naval blockade.

The Israeli foreign ministry said about 175 activists from more than 20 boats had been detained and were being transported to Israel. It dismissed the flotilla as a “PR stunt”.

UK to create alliance of ‘northern navies’ to counter Russian threat

Britain and its allies will forge a new partnership of “northern navies” comprising ships and drones ready to take on Russia, the first sea lord has announced.

In a speech at the Royal United Services Institute, General Sir Gwyn Jenkins said the UK was “at an inflection point” and “there is no time to lose” as he set out plans to bolster defences in northwest Europe and the High North.

Jenkins, the first Royal Marine to be appointed head of the navy, said: “The need to rearm and improve this country’s readiness for war has become an absolute necessity. Just maintaining the ‘capable status quo’ is simply not good enough. We are at an inflection point.”

Bank of Canada holds key interest rate at 2.25%, warning future decisions are clouded by uncertainty

The Bank of Canada kept its key interest rate at 2.25 per cent as expected on Wednesday and said any changes in the rate could be small if its projections for the economy held true.

Governor Tiff Macklem said the key rate is probably at about the right level if the economy follows the central bank’s projections, though he didn’t rule out future adjustments depending on how the risks play out.

“If the economy evolves broadly in line with the base case, changes in the policy rate can be expected to be small,” he said.
