GIESBRECHT: Subsidized media is turning Canada into a one-party state

Canada’s Liberal Party of Canada (LPC) is commonly referred to as the Natural Governing Party of Canada. It has governed Canada for 70% of the 20th century.

After John A. and confederation, the Conservatives had a good run, but once the smooth, Carney-like Wilfred Laurier, and his Liberals eased their way into power, the LPC never really never looked back. In fact, Canada came close to being a one party state.

Alberta was home to the anti-Trudeau movement. Now it looks like it’s Mark Carney’s turn

The flags and T shirts for sale on Amazon have already been updated — same profanity, same maple leaf, new name: F**k Trudeau is out, and F**k Carney has arrived.

The Liberal victory was not a landslide for political newbie Mark Carney as the country remains deeply — sometimes angrily — polarized. Nowhere is that postelection angst being voiced more than in Alberta, the province which largely defied the red wave, whose premier had pledged an “unprecedented national unity crisis” should Carney not meet her list of demands and where fringe groups are now agitating for separation.

A blustery trade-war election. But now Canada must see the bitter reality

It‘s been an election defined by the trade war and washed in nationalism. At every turn, Liberal Leader Mark Carney played up the threat of U.S. President Donald Trump and his own strength and firmness in the face of that.

Mr. Carney arguably won the election as a result. One survey, on which leader can better take on Mr. Trump, showed Mr. Carney with a nearly 40-percentage-point lead over the Conservatives’ Pierre Poilievre. Mr. Trump has called Mr. Carney a “very nice gentleman” and brushed off his campaign rhetoric. But fresh with a new mandate, Prime Minister Carney seems tempted to deliver on his words and escalate the fight.

Adam Pankratz: Too many Canadians happy with Liberal decline

In perhaps the most famous scene of the Charles Dickens classic Oliver Twist, the titular character walks up to the formidable beadle, Mr. Bumble, to meekly ask for more gruel. Monday night, Canadians voters asked for more of the same thin policy gruel from our own political beadles by sending the Liberals back to power for a fourth term. A decade of lost economic prosperity, denigration of national pride and failed immigration policy was ultimately not enough to turn the stomachs of the voting public.

Sex Offenders Make Up Large Share of Homeless Population, New Report Shows

Most Americans understand the link between homelessness and crime. But activists and academics reject the connection, insisting that the homeless pose no elevated crime threat. A new report from the Cicero Institute complicates their argument, revealing that a large share of the nation’s homeless population is composed of registered sex offenders.

The report, covering 41 states, compared counts of sex offenders listed as “homeless” or “address unknown” on state registries with the federal Point-in-Time Count database to determine what proportion of a state’s homeless population appears on its sex-offender registry.

Danielle Smith lowers bar for Alberta referendum with separatism sentiment emerging

OTTAWA — Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she’ll make it easier for citizens to initiate a referendum on the province’s future in Canada, after warning that a Liberal win in Monday’s election could spur a groundswell of support for Alberta separatism.

Smith said on Tuesday that a newly tabled elections bill will give everyday Albertans a bigger say in the province’s affairs.

Turkey: Sweeping Arrests, Torture, Censorship

On March 19, just days before the March 23 primaries of Turkey’s main opposition party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), Istanbul’s Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu — the CHP’s leading candidate who was thought by many possibly to win the next presidential election against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan — was arrested on contested charges of “corruption and terrorism.”

A day earlier, on March 18, Imamoglu’s university degree was revoked, “citing ‘nullity’ and ‘clear error’ as grounds for cancellation… The decision affects Imamoglu and 27 other individuals whose academic credentials have now been invalidated….” according to Turkiye Today.

The Spanish Government Is Lying About the Blackout

Renewable energy had nothing to do with Spain’s catastrophic blackouts, its Prime Minister says, insisting instead that the real culprit was a rare technical failure unrelated to the country’s green energy transition. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez went further and reiterated his government’s opposition to nuclear energy, which he called “far from being a solution.”

Some Conservative MPs voice support for Poilievre as party stays silent on next moves

OTTAWA — Some Conservative MPs are expressing support for party leader Pierre Poilievre after he lost both the federal election and his own seat on Monday.

In his concession speech early Tuesday morning, Poilievre indicated he would stay on as leader. The Conservative party did not respond when asked Wednesday whether he has officially decided to stay.

“My view is he’s not going anywhere,” said Kory Teneycke, Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s former campaign manager and a former director of communications for former prime minister Stephen Harper.
