Supreme Court unanimously upholds forced sale of TikTok from Chinese parent company

The US Supreme Court unanimously upheld a law Friday that would force TikTok’s sale from a Chinese state-owned firm, even as President Biden and President-elect Donald Trump have sought to block the divestment.

The nine justices ordered the qualified divestment by Jan. 19 of the California-based social media platform from Beijing-based ByteDance.

“There is no doubt that, for more than 170 million Americans, TikTok offers a distinctive and expansive outlet for expression, means of engagement, and source of community,” read the key portion of the unsigned opinion.

Canadians are stupid and masochistic according to Globe

Carney and Freeland are perfect foils for Poilievre’s populism

There is probably no one in Canada today more qualified for the job of prime minister than Mark Carney. At 59, his life up to now has been one of awe-inspiring achievement fuelled by the pursuit of excellence in his field of specialization, central banking. His stellar reputation and real-world experience in the roller coaster global financial sector precede him.

Mr. Carney’s long-time friend, and now likely principal rival for the federal Liberal Party leadership, is similarly a woman of singular accomplishment. Chrystia Freeland rode a groundbreaking career in journalism covering the fall of the Soviet Union and rise of Vladimir Putin to insinuate herself among the upper echelons of the global financial establishment before charting a meteoric political career as Canada’s first female finance minister.

Insiders reveal ‘deeply sad’ Kamala feels betrayed by Biden and is warring with everyone…

When Kamala Harris presided over the Congressional certification of the electoral college votes on January 6, naming Donald J. Trump the winner of the 2024 contest, she adopted the stance of the righteous stateswoman, stoically restoring the norms that her opponent once sought to crush.

That’s how many in the mainstream media framed it anyway. Numerous left-leaning outlets fell over themselves praising her generosity of spirit after such a hard-fought, and distinctly nasty, race.

Harris could even be forgiven for caving to the temptation to take a dig at President-elect Trump in a video she released to her supporters just before carrying out her constitutional duties.

So called “Indigenous Business” sold city of Hamilton made-in-China Tiny Homes for $35K each

As tiny homes arrive in Hamilton, councillors ask why city bought made-in-China units for $35K each

When City of Hamilton staff agreed to buy 40 tiny homes from a Brantford, Ont., company for a new outdoor shelter site last fall, they thought they were supporting a local, Indigenous-owned business that was one of the few capable of delivering on a short timeline.

What they didn’t know was MicroShelters was a new corporation that would go through an American company to order the tiny homes from China, staff said at a general issues committee meeting Wednesday.

“It was a very quick turnaround” to meet deadlines on the project, said Danielle Blake, the city’s manager of housing-focused street outreach.

The ‘Trumpiest’ town in the US where no-nonsense ranchers await the era of Maga

Kneeling in the driving seat of his family’s pickup truck, three-year-old Tap Fenster’s eyes barely reach over the steering wheel as he inches the vehicle slowly forwards through the snow.

TeJay, his father, stands on the back and distributes feed to the cattle following behind.

In the same pickup truck an hour earlier – under a blue sky in the icy cold of Nebraska’s Sandhills – Mr Fenster pulled over, grabbed his rifle and shot a coyote from 200 yards.

An Amateurish Fiasco: Justin Trudeau’s Disastrous Tenure Makes Him the Worst Liberal Leader in Canada’s History

Justin Trudeau is only the second elected prime minister in Canadian history, after Jean Chrétien, to be ignominiously pushed out as prime minister by his own party, and this departure is more embarrassing because it follows a bungled attempt to lay all the responsibility for a failed economic policy on the finance minister, Chrystia Freeland, turf her out and replace her with a complete newcomer to elective office.

She helped launch the Women’s March. This year she’s sitting out the fight.

As protesters gather in Washington DC on Saturday for this year’s Women’s March, Vanessa Wruble, one of its founders, will be 2,500 miles away, at her farm in the Californian desert.

“I didn’t even know it was still a thing,” she told the BBC from her five-acre animal sanctuary near Joshua Tree, which features a zebra, mini cows and horses, peacocks and chickens.

Eight years ago, on the eve of the first Women’s March, Wruble had been consumed by it. In the aftermath of Donald Trump’s surprise 2016 victory over Hillary Clinton, Wruble, along with a handful of other female activists, scrambled to pull together a mass protest against the newly elected president.

Israeli security cabinet votes to approve hostage deal ahead of gov’t vote

Israel’s security cabinet voted Friday afternoon to recommend the government approve the outline for the hostage deal after “understanding that the proposed deal supports the achievement of the objectives of the war,” the Prime Minister’s office announced.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir voted against the deal. Likud MK Dudi Amsalem also expressed his opposition.

Israel-Hamas ceasefire welcomed but protests in Canada will not stop, groups say

Pro-Palestinian groups in Canada say a newly negotiated ceasefire deal to pause the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip will not end their regular demonstrations in cities like Toronto, while a national Jewish advocacy group says it “will not rest” until every hostage held by Hamas is released.

While a ceasefire in the 15-month war is welcome news, “there will be no pauses, no breaks, no rests” in protests that have endured for more than a year, said Gur Tsabar, a spokesperson for the Jews Say No to Genocide coalition.

“We’re all praying that this deal comes through for the sake of the people on the ground in Gaza who have been suffering one of the most horrific and brutal atrocities,” Tsabar said Wednesday.

Immigration Leads to Record Population Growth in Several Quebec Regions

A new report from Quebec’s statistics institute says many of the province’s regions grew at a record or near-record pace between 2023 and 2024, due in large part to immigration, while deaths outnumbered births for the first time.

Montreal led the way, adding more than 91,000 people between July 2023 and July 2024 for a 4.2-per-cent growth rate—one of the highest ever recorded in any region.

“Montreal’s growth alone accounts for 44 percent of the total growth recorded in Quebec,” the Institut de la statistique du Québec said Thursday in a news release. Quebec City set a new record at 2.4 percent growth, while the city of Laval and the Outaouais and Mauricie regions followed closely behind.

How YMCA became Donald Trump’s unlikely anthem

Following the announcement that the Village People would be performing at several upcoming inauguration events, what is it about their songs that appeals to the President-elect?

Village People’s YMCA is a high-energy disco hit that encourages young working-class men to meet like-minded individuals at Young Men’s Christian Association hostels. It’s been interpreted as an ode to the delights of picking up sexual partners at them – it appears on an album entitled Cruisin’ – and it was first performed by a group of chiselled dancers sporting moustaches and figure-hugging fancy dress costumes. It’s hardly surprising, then, that the song has been so closely associated with gay culture ever since its release in 1978. What is perhaps surprising is that it is now so closely associated with US President-elect Donald Trump.

LAFD team tasked with preventing wildfires accused of corruption, laziness before blazes devastated city

The arm of the Los Angeles Fire Department in charge of preventing wildfires faced years of allegations of corruption, laziness, harassment and discrimination before the blazes that have devastated the city.

It’s just one of the black marks against the LAFD — which include allegations that a deputy chief was drunk while overseeing a 2021 wildfire in the Pacific Palisades, the very same area devastated by the most destructive blaze in LA history this month.

That firefighter was later cleared of wrongdoing by the department and given a $1.4 million payout.
